AoW: SM is the closest modern game to MoM. Granted, some things work differently, and some features are missing that were present in the original MoM. Then again, MoM had many features that didnt work correctly, so quid pro quo. All in all SM is a very nice approach. My only beef with it are the overly long turns.

Ok, I just reinstalled AoW2: the something throne.

It seems interesting, still walking distance can be a bit long, meaning it's too easy to get attacked before you even see the attacking troops... but at least it's not as ridiculous as HoMM.

But the tutorial/campaigns are horribly scripted: it's like, you're supposed to do something in order, but you have to stumble into the thing that triggers the next event. The tutorial eventually doesn't tell you where to go next, and it simply stops at some point when there's nothing more else to do, apparently. Then I tried the first mission of the campaign, I recruited a few independents, stepped into some teleporter, some fairy gave me a city, and then my own independent soldiers attacked me!

Seriously, AoW(1, 2&SM) is boring as hell when playing against AI. The first few missions are actually fun, as you learn to play and discover all the nice touches, but soon you realise that AI is horrendous, all missions look the same, and you're following the same schematic of winning them.

The game truly shines during hotseat matches(or LAN matches), when each fight is a battle of wits - there are so many tactical options to use that it never gets boring.
Problem is, you need a lot of time to finish a mid-sized map with three or more players. If you can get some friends to come over for a day-long AoW session, it's a win.

Disciples is probably the most fun to play against AI, as it generally does a good job at putting up a resistance, and besides, the game in campaign mode plays almost like an RPG.

I just got bored and attacked the guy giving me the tutorial. With the Undead units whose city he told me to raze after capturing it.
