I didn't get that out of either of those quotes. I always figured Miriam actually was a godfearing Christian.

Nothing says that she couldn't be a godfearing Christian using her PhD in social psychology to manipulate a faction worth of people.

Still, her AI tactics are aware enough to extort you for tech that her faction couldn't develop in half a playthrough. Seems fishy that a genuine Christian fanatic would extort you for tech that her people obviously consider to be unholy.

Are you guys talking about Alpha Centauri? Personally, I always like Gaia. Nothing like MINDWORMS in the morning.

The Gaians are potentially the most unethical faction in the whole game.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

Unethical or SUPER-ETHICAL. They are only trying to bring back the dominance of the poor displaced MIND FLAYING WORMS.

How did worms start controlling people?

Was it done democratically?

I always played the Spartans and would wind up at war with the Gaians almost on contact. We were like baking soda and vinegar.

And no, I said he should cruxify himself because people who apologize and grovel for what they inherit annoy me. My engineer brother-in-law took my sister to some Mexican village on a mission trip where they slept in a church pew and worked during the day. They've taken a Thai refugee woman and her six children into their home through their church group. If you feel so bad about how easy your life is find something to do with all your plundered wealth.

Weeeeeeeeeellllllllll............

Planet is covered in this connected hive mind of xenofungus that is begining to obtain sentience. If your faction starts hurting Planet, then the mind worms show up en mass, like an autoimmune system. The only problem is that Planet is trying to immunize itself to humans. By having the Mind Worms stun the minds of those who fight it. And then lay their ravenous larva inside their skulls.

But the Gaians play all nice with Planet, so you can eventualy breed these elderich horrors. And then become one with them.

I love when I read page 1 of a topic, then decide to skip to page 10, and see discussion of Alpha Centauri mind flaying worms.  I can conclude this discussion went well.

Anyway I think this topic is about the matrix. Like when he took those pills and he was happy but the other pill would make him sad.

Thats cool how a discussion about philosophy turned into some banal shit about some video game character nobody has ever heard of.

Now that that picture's out of the way, back on topic (or at least close too it).

The US of A cannot be the world police. It didn't work in Iraq, it didn't work anywhere else, in fact, and it won't ever work.

That said, States citizens CAN help other people. It just doesn't work well on a global scale.

I say, (and I should clarify that I am an States citizen) the US should get rid of the aircraft carriers, the international array of bases, the missile silos. Arrange the military as a solely defensive system with only two offensive groups; remote attacks, which use telepresence drones and such to allow engaging things on a military level externally when necessary, and a small fund of a couple billion dollars to keep a couple of guys named Vito on hand for the small stuff.

Those three departments, taken together, would cost a tiny fraction of what we have now, and would leave all the citizens of other countries without our overbearing presence.

Some people would say that the overnight disappearance of the military-industrial complex would ruin the economy. What would they say to a tax reduction for everyone of nearly all of the military's budget, and the remaining 10% or 20% being split to education, infrastructure, and dept reduction. When we sell off the massive quantities of military infrastructure, we'll put most of that money into paying off the dept too.

And where would we get all our protection from? How would we keep the USA's enemies away? Well, as far as I can tell, the only thing that people really hate about the US is it's invasive preemptive attacks. So if we have a tiny, purely defensive military, well, there goes that problem. Nobody's going to invade us for our resources- those are gone. There are no idealistic threats that a military has any chance of fighting (Seeing as the insurgent population of Iraq and Afghanistan has most likely only gone up in the time we've been there), so we aren't getting weaker, and maybe 5% or 6% of that formerly military spending can be sent over to the intelligence and police groups who's job it is to actually solve those sorts of problems.

how do you know security will make you happy. Adventure is defined by risk. DF is a fun game because your dwarfs are never perfectly safe.

Also how do you quantify happiness? I dont think you can make generailsed decisions about what will make a group of people happy (unless theres ice cream involved).

That's all very well, but I'd rather not die and have my corpse stripped of belongings by friends and family, thank you very much.

Someone is going to end up stripping you and cleaning you up when you die you know... it may as well be friends and family and not total strangers...
