What skills do you start with?
« on: May 27, 2010, 09:07:03 pm »

When starting a new adventure mode game, what skills do you like to start with? I personally usually start with 7 point (adequate) in swimmer and shield user and 13 points in a weapon skill. I find with this I can slaughter even town guards with ease while receiving at most minimal damage, usually less. What skills do you find to easier/harder/more fun/etc.?

+2 to swimming
+2 to dodge
+2 to armor user
+2 to shield user
the rest into whatever weapon skill, and maybe +2 into fighter - that's new :)

+1 ambushing
+2 swimming
+1 dodge
+1 shield user
+the-rest into a weapon.

I can grind just about everything else to legendary rather quickly, so it's a matter of starting with the skills that are hardest to get experience for, or things you just really need points in. I always get at least novice shield user and dodge, so I actually have a chance to dodge or block in the first place. Swimming is just easier to have at two forever. i never really need it any higher. And Ambush is SO useful in caverns and stuff. Gotta love sneaking up on a trog and cutting its head off in one blow.

Skills?  I usually select the 'Play Now!' feature.

Eveything except one point in throwing, and the one point into swordsmanship.

The "fighter" skill is quite important now - you should have at least 2 points in it.

Grind wrestling and throwing (both take minimal effort and are pretty easy to do) and that guarantees legendary fighter because throwing counts for both the throwing skill and the bowman skill. Personally, I think putting points in it is worthless. Just make sure you start with one point in dodge and one in shield so you can block and dodge the wolves in the beginning, then lay there and let them wail on you while you block them a hundred times per turn xD

+2 swimmer
+2 weapon skill
+2 armor user
And the rest goes into Shield User.  (Occasionally I'll throw a couple points into fighting, ambushing, or throwing)

+2 swimmer
+2 shield
+1 armor
+1 fighter (new, and also levels extremely quickly, along with wrestling (no idea how i became a legendary wrestler without ever making a wrestling move)
+1 dodge
+1 or 2 ambusher, depending on how i feel about rampaging or assassination, which i usually perform by waiting for the victim to stand near a tree or bush and setting them on fire.
Everything else into weapons, sometimes I take throwing, but that's easy enough to gain otherwise, not being life-threatening to train by dropping your weapon that you actually have some points in. I think armor user is training faster now too, or else my shield isn't making as many saving throws, as it is currently higher than shield user on my adventurer, which i learned was impractical in 40D.

Yeah, you seem to gain the wrestling skill by having other people grapple or charge you now. Not sure if thats a bug, but you basically gain the skill as fast as whatever is wrestling you is.

+2 swimming
+2 dodge
+2 fighter
+2 Sheild user
+2 Armor user
+1 ambusher
The rest dumped into whatever weapon I want to use, which brings that up to Proficent.

This build uses every last point you can use.

I typically do +2 shield user, +2 armor user, +1 ambusher, +2 swimmer, and everything else into my weapon skill, though I'm considering droping armor user entirely since all it does is make your armor weigh less (and at +2, it's barely enough to be noticeable) and probably putting it into dodging instead.

Skilled Axedwarf
Skilled Shield User
Novice Dodger
Novice Ambusher
Novice Swimmer
The rest: Armor User

I hope those points add up correctly. I can't remember specifically. In 31.x versions, Axes have a long cutting edge and a lot of mass and impact power which has given me the most reliable and consistent one-strike knockdowns. Upon losing a limb, most creatures fall down or black out and bleed to death if left alone. Using Ambusher (Sneaking) at all times, I've managed to walk up and bisect or instantly incapacitate most targets in one blow.

Dwarves have no trouble using a Great Axe, which is even more powerful, and you'll find masterwork or exceptional bronze ones for "Free" in human towns ;)
