Fight with style. put skills in these:

Sword - Coolest weapon

Dodge - It's so cool when your adventurer move around in combat. And armor only softens blows. You'll be doomed in case of blunt attacks. And the best thing is: you will be less likely to be hit with arrows

Swimmer - in case of water fight

I call this style "The Fencer"  ;D

Skilled Axedwarf
Skilled Shield User
Novice Dodger
Novice Ambusher
Novice Swimmer
The rest: Armor User

I hope those points add up correctly. I can't remember specifically. In 31.x versions, Axes have a long cutting edge and a lot of mass and impact power which has given me the most reliable and consistent one-strike knockdowns. Upon losing a limb, most creatures fall down or black out and bleed to death if left alone. Using Ambusher (Sneaking) at all times, I've managed to walk up and bisect or instantly incapacitate most targets in one blow.

Dwarves have no trouble using a Great Axe, which is even more powerful, and you'll find masterwork or exceptional bronze ones for "Free" in human towns ;)

This build works. I was able to go on a rampage in a human town with the default armor/shield/axe.
