Putting a mosque on top of a former church seems a bit wrong

Why? Religious buildings have been being converted to other religions and replacing each other forever
The minarets on Hagia Sophia are a travesty >:(

That's actually exactly what I had in mind, but there's plenty of examples from any religion you can think of to any other

No, it's like McDonald's buying the Eiffel Tower and putting a restaurant in it.

Lol, exactly because of that. IIRC, Hagia Sophia was converted after conquest. Heck, most religious buildings have been converted to other religions after conquest. I see it perfectly fine if they bought it out, but it got destroyed by collateral damage from a politician using religion as their casus belli. I can see how some people would get offended, but then the people whose church were destroyed weren't, so it's not a problem there.

Hagia Sophia wasn't converted to a Mosque by Crusaders or Jihadists, it was converted to a Mosque by the Ottomans after they captured Constantinople.

The Big Mac always struck me as rather bad really, it's just a burger that has been padded with extra bread and a ton of lettuce. Give me a double whopper any day.

It has also been rebuilt a few times due to earthquakes, so thats part of the reason.

Some of the old Byzantine stuff that's there did get preserved. Whether that was intentional or not, no idea.

Edit: The wiki says that the mosaics were plastered over, so yea...

And later, the plaster was removed. Honestly, plaster is easy to chip off.

The Hagia Sophia actually retains parts of the original dome, which was the first dome put on top of a rectangular building. Something about a circle of columns and a hole chopped in the roof.

I like how a discussion about a small groups response to a mosque being built morphed into a review of the history of Haga Sophia. Ah, the internet.

As to the original topic, its just the case that in a free society, you need to put up with the crazier elements, despite their, uh, biases. They have the right to protest something they see as offensive, no matter what more sensible people think. And yes, as was pointed out, the mosque was given near-unanimous support by the community leaders, just this one group tried to protest it.  If you're trying to paint Americans as all racist, xenophobic muslim-haters, this isn't a good example.

Yeah, the icons in Hagia Sophia are now visible again. Worse for wear after 1500 years and being plastered over, but pretty decent. Then there's Islamic calligraphy in there too, it's pretty interesting to see.

Man, the Ottomans were SO COOL.

Damn straight. When they seiged Constantinople, they used this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They made this bitch in 1464. And they used it for 300 years! It was operational in 1808! And they killed 23 of the British attack team with it!
