I think maybe in the case of the OK bombing, the guy claimed to be a patriot but the people putting up the flag wanted to denounce his claim of patriotism and establish their own. So it's a little different, and more complicated.

How does not that same thing not apply here, just replace OK bombing with 9/11 and patriotism with Islam

I know that I have some reservations about building a mosque near ground zero, just like most people would have a problem building a gun emporium next to Columbine. Is it that surprising that people have a problem with building something that reminds them of a tragedy? Not to mention the fact that the bloody construction was approved.


Here's something that people need to understand. America has a specific political culture, one that is adversarial and strongly supportive of individual rights. This means that there is ALWAYS someone who is willing to angrily picket absolutely anything.

It seems to me it would be a good idea. Perhaps ask the mosque to fly a large, visible American flag. It would show Muslims that in at least one instance, the freedom to practice religion if you so choose, the American government isn't so draconian as the propaganda would have them believe. Even though I think religion does more harm then good, I am not opposed to my neighbors doing what they will with it as long as it doesn't physically harm myself or other human beings.

The ironic problem is that religious people often don't seem to believe the same thing, due to that "one true faith" illness they all seemed to have contracted over the years.

I think perhaps flying an American flag over the mosque would give the crazy terrorist a reason to think the mosque is somehow "corrupted" or "not really holy" or something.

The irony of this is that the Americans who are the most likely to be offended by the mosque don't have a problem with extremism, as long as it's a type that serves them well or suits their ire. How many "death to Islam" types really care much about how many civilian targets get bombed in US military action in the Middle East, for instance? Hell, some of them probably want that.
