I meant on top of ground zero itself would be inappropriate, but no problem with a mosque near it I guess.

Bit odd considering the relative scale of the two incidents... eh.

As for the mosque, I don't see any reason for the objection.  You don't randomly hold a grudge against a religion like that.  I mean, should those in the middle east ban churches because of the Crusades?

9/11 is still in living memory, the crusades aren't.

Besides that, okay yea what I said was a knee jerk opinion statement and really didn't think about it.

Strangely, guys, when I posted and typed in "mosque " (with a space) the first thing that came up on Google auto-complete was "mosque at ground zero". Which is pretty freakin' scary since mosques have been around for quite a while befor enow, and I'd assume they represent a significant number of entries on websites.

So I guess either this has totally exploded all over the Internet and we can't tell, or Google is very adaptive to sudden trends. I'm thinking the latter.

This is why I'm proud to be an American.
/sarcasm

How stupid do you have to be to associate every member of one of the world's largest religions with a terrorist attack carried out by 20 people who are unarguably at the very fringe of their system of belief?
The pilots who dropped Little Boy on Japan were Christians. Did Japan ban churches? Shoot me if I'm wrong, but I think there's a church right next to Ground Zero (in Japan) today.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.

In any case my point is that it shows people are dumb and are willing to implicate 16% of the planet's population for something 20 people did, which is exactly what you're doing if you assume a mosque is somehow an affront to the victims' memories

"People" is a very vague term.  That ABC article notes that the local community board voted on the proposal to tear down a 150 year old building to build the mosque.  Despite the mob of loud idiots with dead children signs, they still voted 29 to 1 to approve the idea, with the blessings of the Mayor and the official noninvolvement of the city offices.  I'd say that speaks quite well that even in Manhattan itself, the clockwork jackasses of the Fearful Fifth are voted down on something like this.

"People" means more than one person. I'm just ragging on the idiots here I realize there are plenty of non idiots.

I mean it's technically true to say that "Muslims are terrorists" - as long as there are at least two Muslims in existence who are terrorists, it is a logically true statement. But that's just a linguistic tangent I wanted to go on, not relevant

Also a better analogy is that nobody would say it's offensive to fly an American flag next to the Oklahoma City building that got bombed; in fact I'm sure it was done almost right away. But that attack was done in the name of American patriotism! So the same principle that leads people to object to this mosque should lead them to object to any US flag being flown near the site of that bombing, right? Unless they're motivated by stupid xenophobia and not logic.

And why are we arguing about it on here? No members of the forum that I can think of would even be volatile about this, except for maybe IMW but he's gone.

So yes.  People are idiots.  American media does some really stupid shit.  NYC is still pissed off about the World Trade Center.  But why are we clogging the server with this?

Oh right.  I hate it when people are ignorant and start complaining about every little thing they see.  Don't you?

EDIT: That's a zing, but it wasn't intentional.

I think maybe in the case of the OK bombing, the guy claimed to be a patriot but the people putting up the flag wanted to denounce his claim of patriotism and establish their own. So it's a little different, and more complicated. Probably better to find an example where it's a foreign country.

People aren't mentioning that if there's a mosque there, and a terrorist believes in the mosque's religion, then he might be less likely to blow up the area. Thinking from a purely RTS perspective, it would be helpful to place the mosque right across the street.

Zone of protection sort of thing.

That is a quote if there ever was one.  Expect to see it linked to in many threads to come.
