In other news, if some Christian wackjob group blew up a building a church got built there a few years later, nobody would get mad about it

Took me a while to figure out why anyone in America would care about people building mosques in Japan.  :-[

A mosque would be really inappropriate anyway.

We're talking about New York, not Japan.

Japan has a Ground Zero too. Where we went and dropped some things... what do they call them... nukes?

But really my point is just that some people are assuming it's disrespectful to build a mosque near where a terrorist attack happened that was inspired by Islam

but it's really just because they're xenophobic and can't help but associate 1/6 of the world's population with a terrorist attack

@smjjames why would a mosque be inappopriate

That's what I meant by my post, I originally thought of ground zero as Japan and it was a while before I realised it has started to refer to New York too.

ABC article

Because nobody else seemed willing to google it :P

I think the thing at the bottom is telling: it mentions that emotions are still raw over the WTC attack. It's nice that we have the luxury of feeling that bad about it. There are places in the world right now where they suffer the equivalent civilian death toll regularly. Like weekly. I'd need to find my source again to give any specific number.

And yeah, I only thought of the NY ground zero first because I'm American - if I were Japanese I'm sure I would have thought of Hiroshima or Nagasaki first.

Your quality is slipping Jude ol' buddy.  How about that link?  Because I mainline cable news into my jugular, and even in that insipid newsodrome of feign outrage and manufactured controversy, I've heard nothing about any mosque erected in downtown Manhattan, nor any shit flipping over such.

Huh.  Well, blow me down, outrage.  Bear in mind, you're linking to an article from the New York Post.  I suspect the most interested people in the mosque-building are the Post's editors.

Ninja'd: Dammit, I just want to make this dismissive post and go back to not caring.  Ninja'd: Fuck, now it's on NBC.  Damn you enthnocentrists!  You make it really hard to be apathetic.

@Aqizzar: this thing has been in the news for a while. I just gave the news link from a thread I saw on a different forum, but it's hardly the only one.

In any case my point is that it shows people are dumb and are willing to implicate 16% of the planet's population for something 20 people did, which is exactly what you're doing if you assume a mosque is somehow an affront to the victims' memories

I don't see how a mosque would be inappropriate...

But, I can see people some Americans hating on all the Muslims just so they can have someone to direct their hate and blame on.

Basically saying that it's wrong to build a mosque near Ground Zero because 9/11 was done in the name of Islam is like saying it's wrong to fly an American flag near that church that got bombed in the 60s because the church bombing was done by an American patriot

"People" is a very vague term.  That ABC article notes that the local community board voted on the proposal to tear down a 150 year old building to build the mosque.  Despite the mob of loud idiots with dead children signs, they still voted 29 to 1 to approve the idea, with the blessings of the Mayor and the official noninvolvement of the city offices.  I'd say that speaks quite well that even in Manhattan itself, the clockwork jackasses of the Fearful Fifth are voted down on something like this.

I don't think it is offensive, but it is close enough to a sensitive thing for people to knee-jerk. Cut yourself once, you get edgy near knives, you know?
