Or like opening up a series of missions in regions around the world where your religious leaders have actively ordered their extermination, amirite.

Or because religious buildings have traditionally been zoned into that area in the past.

Didn't know this, but it definitely helps explain it.

I remember right after the attacks, the media was going wild about how miraculous it was that this church, I think it was Catholic, managed to get out unscathed.

They ignored the fact that a Greek Orthodox Church was crushed by one of the towers, and they had to clean out piles and piles of dismembered body parts before they could rebuild.

I find all this xenophobia and "they need to constantly say they are not criminals" rather disturbing. With the same logic, any Catholic church within 500m of a school or playground should be forced to put up a sign "we do not encourage child molestation".

There was a time this could have been needed. Heck to some people it is still true and they whole heartedly believe that all priests are predisposed to molest children. It is sort of odd to talk to those people...

I think it might say something about the cultural divide between Eastern and Western values when the muslims that want to build the mosque say it would "help 'bridge the great divide' between Muslims and the rest of America." while the idea of a mosque near ground zero provokes alot of Americans.

Yes, I think it says a lot about how great the divide is and how easily it creates misinformation and xenophobia.

That just proves that Catholicism is the one true denomination. The Orthodox really should've gotten the hint when Constantinople fell.

I'm going to go against the crowd here and say it really is a terrible idea.

To your average American, 9-11 is the most significant single event that happened in their lifetime.  I mean, politicians get knocked for not wearing their 911 flag pin on TV.

To build a church for the religion that motivated the attacks, even if that was just a radical wing of an otherwise peaceful religion, is tasteless.  Whoever made that call probably did it to be a smartass.

It'd be like having Oktoberfest on the site of an old concentration camp.  Not all Germans are Nazis, Oktoberfest is a peaceful and splendid festival, but it's still a bad idea that's bound to offend droves of people.

There you already show the exact reason why the mosque is needed. Namely to separate those radicals from that religion. Or the other way around, by saying that it shouldn't be there, you indirectly state that you do not really believe in that distinction between the peaceful religion and the fanatics.

Besides, now that it is on the table, it becomes another part in the entire xenophobia and prejudice campaign which already resulted in nice antics like the London police killing that completely harmless civilian a few years ago: As far as I know, the Muslim community in the US has been worried about discrimination born from ignorance and fear and the protest against this mosque will probably only heighten that worry. And in doing so, you also encourage a separation between the Muslim community and the rest of the country - a separation that can only lead to further misunderstandings.

People keep invoking culture, but I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean... unless you're saying Americans are inherently judgemental?

Yeah, it'd be like building a church for a religion that motivated the colinization and massacre of a population on that continent.... oh wait.

Its nice to step back and remember that most people are mostly normal, though.

As an American, I'm perfectly fine with a Mosque being built in the area. It's not like they could build it on 'ground zero' anyhow, considering the plans for a new tower.
