Yeah, whilst the thing doesn't look, and wasn't (three hour reloading times) efficient, it's still a pretty risky move to build what's not so much a cannon as a it is a Norse God in cannon form (you know which part) and start firing it at a city if you didn't want to destroy much of it.

Well, wishing to keep the city intact only went so far. After Constantinople gave up, the soilders were allowed to plunder the city for three days. Much rape, arson, slavery, and murder commenced. Post-loss cities are not happy places.
