Ivan read the answer to his letter, and crumbled it in distaste. Damn these "Court officials". Couldn't they see that this was a crucial request? Nevertheless, it seemed he would have to make something out of what he had. Atleast he had a semblance of promise in that letter.
He pulled the rope attached to a bell somewhere in the barracks. He would have to get an unit together if he was to complete these orders. He could only hope that the court had a suitable reward in mind. First of all, a big bag of gold would be nice...

It didnt take long for an unit of "troops" to be put together. A rag tag band of peasants eager to escape their dreary lives of working their ass off in some small field and all the while paying him, Ivan, for the right to do it. They would, no doubt, die quickly. Probably the only trained soldiers in this whole "Army" were his two bodyguards, Gregor and Igor. They were both silent men, the kind that looked at you with eyes that said nothing and would say nothing when they punched your teeth out and sliced your guts apart.
Ivan liked the two men.

Orders:
Ivan and the army move west on the forest path. They shouldnt reach the forest yet.

Uskicia-Two weeks ago
Soldiers rush through the streets to man the walls. The sound of cannonfire fills the air, and the air is dark with smoke and ash. Swords clash, men die, horses flee in terror. In the midst of it all, Harkon sits upon his faithful steed, rallying his men, shouting orders, and hacking at any Saracen that comes near.
A lucky cannon shot crashes into the gates, cracking them open. With a shouted order Harkon gathers his cavalry behind him, and charges. The Azure Skull flies forwards, between the ranks of footsoldiers, crushing through the Saracen defenders, and through the gates. The rank follows as the knights dismount and open the gates all the way, and within minutes, the walls are overrun. The defenders pull back to prepared barricades, and a week of urban warfare follows.

Uskicia-One week ago
Harkon wipes his blade on his equally filthy robe and sheaths it, as underlings rush to pull down the Saracen flag and replace it with the respective flags of the King, the Church, and House Shurgem. Harkon leans on the battlements, and looks over his conquest. Much of the city is obscured by smoke and flames, but the heathen spires of the Saracen temples are clearly visible, contrasting against the sturdy, east-european architecture of the old Uskicia. They would have to be destroyed. He grunted, rolled his shoulders, and turned round.
"Commander!" he barked. His second in command saluted. "Find the body of that pitiful excuse for a leader that these filthy towleheads had, and have it preserved. The people will be happy to see it paraded around the capital." The man nodded, and, shouting orders himself, headed back down through the castle to where the enemy commander lay.
Later that week, the Royal troops begin their long march back to the capital, leaving Harkon with a small band of inexperienced men, who spend most of their time dragging corpses outside of the city to be burnt.

Uskicia-Now
Amongst the smouldering ruins, Harkon does paperwork. Reports to the king- how many dead Saracens, how much arable farmland, what damage to defences.
'I am pleased to report that the sand-eaters appear to have had some respect for the beautiful horses bred here. The stables are filled with fine warhorses, who, though skittish from the recent siege, and trained in the arabic tongue, should nevertheless make decent mounts for me and my soldiers. I intend to delay my departure for the pass for a week, as that I may select suitable mounts and train my men in their use'
True to his word, Harkon spent the rest of the week outfitting his men. Horses were merely a part of the preparations- the 'soldiers' wore no uniform, just leather armour and a shield with the dual symbols of the King and the Church on them. Shirts were died blue as a temporary uniform, Saracen weapons and armour were re-purposed and distributed. At the end of the week, they were still a rabble, but at least they had horses, a Shurgem Uniform, and decent weapons.

Actions:
Harkon Unit A is outfitted with horses.

So they hadn`t forgotten him, here at the end of the world.

Gawaren looked out of the window, elated. Below him in the yard his so called "soldiers" were being mustered and equipped. At Evenfall on the morrow he would march westwards with his "army".

They were no soldiers, nor an army. Just a rabble of raw recruits and peasants, they had yet to see their first battle. It didn`t matter. "I once started with less." He mused, grinning.

The pope had entrusted him with the leadership of the vanguard in the upcoming campaign. Finally. It was a sign that his skill was still valued- And a possibility to get the favor of the pope..

He drained his cup of wine and tossed it to the ground. He woulnd`t miss Drakenpeak. It was a formidable fortress, and quite the sight to behold.. But life here was dreadfully dull. The days were too hot and the nights to cold and drakes no living man had seen in ages. More`s the pity; A few war drakes would have been quite useful.

Gawaren turned away from the window. He still had matters to attend to; Annoying paperwork and arrangements. And he had to prepare a little speech, too. He always spoke to his soldiers before a campaign or before a battle and often enough they would repay him with victory.

This time, too, he hoped. The road ahead was hard enough. Most of his horses had died unter the hot sun and now he was literally trapped here. He had sent pigeons some months ago to the other lords, asking for horses.. But it could take weeks till they would arrive.. If the lords would send horses. Thus far he had not received any messages.

Still, he had some alternatives. He had also sent messengers to the nomads living in the desert. He had promised them that he would leave them alone, and in peace, and offered them gold and the right to practice their religion freely, as long as they didn`t trouble the christians.. Just as he hadn`t troubled the muslims as he had taken the city. He was fair and just to those who were fair and just to him.

All that he wanted in exchange were some horses and a few desert guides. Or at least enough water for his march through the desert, if they coulnd`t spare enough horses. He wondered whether they would accept; His messengers should return soon.

If not, he had to expect some losses. That woulnd`t increase the moral.. His speech better should be good, he reflected.
___

Orders:

I ask the nomads for horses and guides.. Or enough water, if they can`t spare enough horses. In exchange i promise them the right to live free and in peace.. And some gold.

Further i send pigeons to the other lords, asking for horses.

Then i raise a unit (and equip them with horses, if i get some this turn from the nomads or other lords) and move together with the unit as far westwards towards the city at 23,-14 as possible. Though, i make sure to end my movement near/on a oasis. (If i can`t equip a unit with horses and move in the same turn i just equip the unit with horses and wait.)
If a lord should promise me horses; But not in this turn, i just raise the unit and wait for the horses to arrive.

(deserts require 2 action points to traverse. you have 5, meaning you can only move 2 tiles. unless you get your hands on cavalry (through trade, maybe?) or some other way get faster units, you would lose some through thirst)

Alexis kicked a broken dagger into one of the corners of his new mess hall. His troops - peasant recruits - were still too occupied with training to have time to finish up cleaning the mess the Duke had created when retaking the city. As he mulled over his new orders, Alexis felt growingly uneasy. While he was happy about the powerful Occidental presence in the north, he feared the new and ambitious generals might soon resort to in-fighting. It was also impossible to know how organized these saracens were: they could reunite at any moment. While the recent victories were very inspiring, the Duke felt the war against the saracens would only begin getting more difficult from now on.

But that would be later. Today they would march.

[A unit is raised, and Alexis moves with his army east, to (-4, -6).]

Alexis sighed. This was going to take a long, long time...

Reginald read through the letter twice then burned it, all its details fixed in his mind.

He analyzed its contents, his resources and his options. Number were calculated, compared, and a course of action became clear.

For now, he would do as he was told, serve those that were currently above him. Their time would not last forever.

He assembled a small force of about a hundred. Some volunteered themselves, some had been volunteered by others. They would do.

We gave them a speech. He had planned this speech out beforehand, every word carefully chosen and selected for maximum effect. By the end of it, the men were fanatical, willing to die for him. Very suitable, as a significant number probably would.

ORDERS:
Assemble what troops can be assembled at Hanomo and take them as far west as possible.

From the journal of Adriaen Cromwell
Quote
Rule one of "On The General Tactics and Strategye": Know your enemy. Rule two: Make sure he doesn't. And those have proven more than succesfull in the past years. But there is barely any time, I will have to act quickly. What do I know: They departed monday morning, and should have done one third of the road by sunday. It's a safe guess that they will travel past the crossroads 2 and a half weeks from now. That gives me three days to prepare the men, and two weeks of forced marching. If I want some scouts that can stay ahead of a column on forced march, I will need the best I have. But it is perfectly possible, we have done worse. Even better, there is no-one near that can get to this city while we are away - even if they can march at full speed over the hills, they will need at least a month. I can go with the army and leave only minimal guard at the city. Yes, I think I'll do just that. And the city, even though it's mostly one big ruin now, shall be called St. Benedictus, and we will make it prosper. Already, the neighbouring villages are helping us to build a pallisade and some barracks. The troops will be more than glad to get rid of those filthy tents.

I should try to blockade the saracen city continously. Destroying their trade cripples the army, and the sooner those dogs are out of the Alps, the better.

Orders: the unit in St. Benedictus moves North, led by Cromwell.

The small outpost was nothing more then a village around the simple Moat and Bailey, the King had given the fiefdom many years ago and his family had honored the King with his every request of them, most of the time it was just simple taxation or to assist with raising enough men to mount an army for the small skirmishes that were common around those days. As was the duty of a Minor Vassal. A bird had appeared on the window sill of Garroth's chambers while he was deep within his work, tied around its leg was a message bearing the Kings seal. Along with the Churches announcement that had passed through every village, outpost and City in all of Europe, this was becoming troublesome...

The paper burned in the flames of his hearth, the words committed to memory, the wax bubbled and popped as it melted and the insignia disappeared into the coals. Pushing himself from the desk he collected a few notes he had lying around, the current resources that his feif held, and the census of the people under his reign. He would need to raise a force himself, one that he would command at the front instead of taking orders from those of higher rank then him. Full Fledged war was passing over Europe shortly, who would know where it would lead...

ACTION // Raise a Small force := 100 Infantry, Green, Equipment Basic.

note: such keeping of lists are very much appreciated.
in case I forget something on my own lists, it's good to have one that is kept independantly
to make it complete, keep in mind a unit also has a morale stat, currently at average for everyone

if you have a resource, I would have PMd you about it

no PM stating you have a resource in your city = no resource, yet
