equipping a unit with horses takes one turn. they can not move and be equipped in the same turn

move, or equip

chose fast, I am currently writing up next turn, because damn, you are here in the very last second

edit: well, now it's too late. when I say turns are 24 hours, then posting 24hours and 10 minutes afterwards is not going to be given an extra hour
your units shall stay and be equiped

We have arrived at the section, and our scouts report that the enemy will arrive next week. They are greater in number, but that doesn't matter - Was it not the great King Leonidas, for instance, that with a mere 300 men killed thousands of his enemies before finally succumbing to the overwhelming odds? Did not the roman troops, lead by ceasar, defeat virtually all of gallia, often fighting with only one soldier for every ten barbarians? Tactics, strategy, and discipline is important. I confess, the troops lack discipline. Most of them are replacements from those we lost in the war. But the nearing army is not marching in column, sloppy in guarding, and they didn't even notice the scouts - so they lack discipline and experience at least as much as we do. I will play my tactics during the battle - so for now, I have to focus on strategy. This is easy. A road trough a dense forest is asking for an ambush. We have a full week to prepare, to make our camp virtually invisible from more than a few hundred meters. The enemy is not in any formation whatsoever. With the archers hiding in the trees and the infantry behind cloacks of carefully placed shrubbery, they will walk right into a death trap. Before they realise what happens, maybe half of them will lie dead already, serving only to confuse and scare the survivors even more. We can win this. No, we will win this.

(The army prepares for an ambush. The scouts stay near the camp, looking for enemy scouts and making sure they don't return)

A hundred horses stand by the ruined gates of Uskicia, their packs filled with weapons and supplies. A hundred soldiers stand to attention by their horses. Harkon gives the command to mount, and they leave the city.
They ride for several uneventful days across the plains. By the end of the week the enemy city is in sight, and scout reports are coming in regarding its defences.
Harkon listened to the scouts with growing impatience. Eventually, he interrupted them.
"Enough! It is clear you have no idea how strong their forces are, and who leads them. That the walls are weak says nothing about the force that holds them. Even if we had three times our number I would hesitate to charge recklessly into battle against an unknown foe. We shall make camp outside their walls, disrupt their supply lines. If we can draw the enemy out, we will be able to best make use of our cavalry. And otherwise, it will give you fools time to do your job properly! Now get out of my sight!"
As the scouts ran off, Harkon barked orders to his captains, who rode out to block the roads through which grain entered the city. Of course, a proper siege would require circling the city, but hopefully this would be enough of an annoyance for the enemy to show his head, allowing the scouts to make more accurate reports of their makeup.

Meanwhile, the stable-hands of Uskicia select the finest beasts in their stables to be sent to the southern deserts.

Harkon and cavalry ride for 38,10 and lay siege. Scouts are sent ahead to investigate the city at (40, 9).
Also Lordinquisitor is given horses.

Outnumbered three to one. That was not how Romuald wanted to fight. Yet for some reason fate conspired to make all of his fights turn out that way. And he was glad for it, as it let him learn the many tricks of the trade of being a stealthy bastard.

"Hide everyone." he said to a passing sergeant.
"Clear traces of our presence".
"Scouts, keep an eye on the incoming enemy, I want to know who is leading them, how they are prepared and if they know about our presence here. And try to find out what they are transporting."
"You, keep an eye on the north road. I don't want surprises."

Orders : Prepare an ambush

Reginald and his men continued the march westwards. Though the pace was tough, they satisfied themselves by singing chants. The forest resounded with the sound of their voices.

Reginald did not particularly like the singing. It was ineffecient, a waste of energy. He would have preferred that they travel in silence, but he knew the wonders that such things could do for morale, so he joined them in it.

Orders:
Continue marching to the west.

Thoughtfully Gawaren regarded the letters that had arrived over the course of the week. Oh, polite they were, apolegetic and reassuring they were.. And he didn`t doubt that most of those lords would have sent horses if they`d had enough.. But in the end all the messages were giving the same answer: No.

All but one letter- The Letter from General Harkon. He had promised him horses, though he wasn`t sure when they would arrive. They could arrive today.. Or in two weeks..
At least he did send some, unlike those treacherous nomads. Well, if truth be told his messengers hadn`t found any significant nomad tribe yet.. They still searched, though it was unlikely that they would find one in time. Just as the christians were readying their armies the Saracens weren`t idle either and also mustered their troops.

And every hour i waste here, waiting, just gives them more time to prepare their defences. He thought. He didn`t like that- He had always been renowned for his quick and speedy strikes..

"It can`t be helped, i march out!" He declared and bolted out of the room.. And nearly crashed into his squire.

"M`lord." He said, timid , perplexed by Gawarens behaviour. "There`s a caravan on the horizon.. Bringing horses.  A hundred, at least. And they march under the banner of General Harkon."

So they did come in time- Harkon was as reliable as he remembered. "I guess i will have to think about a suitable gift in turn." Gawaren declared, smiling, as he watched the caravan marching through the gates.

Preparing his men and the horses would take some hours.. But, they would be able to cross the desert faster, with less casualties.

----------

I equip the raised units with horses and send scouts as far westwards as i can. (Along the path i intend to take.)

Looking out over the village below he couldn't help but laugh to himself. Not only had the men came forward almost immediately but more keep coming forward by the day, coming from outlying villages and smaller farms that existed on his land. Who knows when they could make use of them, but their numbers did not make for another unit...

Making his way down out of the Wooden keep that he called home, he approached the young Captain under his command. A salute and a quick muttered debrief was enough to help move Garroth's hand. It was time to follow the orders that had been on that small piece of paper. At first he thought to move along the road travel westward to reach his destination, but something told him not too...

A few weeks later they set out from the young lord's land, finding a hunter's path through the forest to the south. Sending light runners ahead of the pack to inspect the area before them...

MOVE // Garroth + Unit 1/2 Move to 7,17 and 7,16 (Movement Speed is 4 Correct, Costing 2 to pass through Forests each time)

"Ohhh... Im a lumberjack and im O.K, I drink all night and I sleep all day!" "Heee'ss a lumberjack and he's O.K, he drinks all night and he sleeps all day!"

Ivan and his retinue arrived to the camp sometime around midnight, only to be greeted by the drunken revelry of the song echoing through the forest. No wonder these people needed protection.
Seeing the state of the work, Ivan couldnt but help feel angry. These men could have atleast TRIED to do some work in advance, instead of lying around drinking some foul swill they had cooked up in a makeshift still.
He would see to it that they would regret their lack of discipline... in the near weeks.

Orders:
Ivan arrives to the forest and starts the logging towards west per haste.

"Sir Drake, the ships have been moored and secured, and the cargo is being unloaded. We should be done by evening."

"Hmm, good, good... Remind the footsoldiers yet again to be careful with the parts. We cant afford to break anything in the middle of this desert. Cactus wood isn't exactly usable to build a trebuchet."

"Yes, sir."

With that, the officer left Arthur alone in the planning room. He was examining the intelligence his scouts had given him, and the situation seemed promising. The city was less defended than the other desert Saracen cities he had had scouted, with lower walls and fewer men.

But it still wouldn't be a walk in the park. Abud Bin Mayaddah, a reputable Saracen general, was commanding the forces in the city. He was probably more experienced than the young Arthur Drake, and had had time to fortify himself in his city. Arthur could not stall his attack too long, for the fight against the Saracen might depend on taking this city in the long run. He could only hope his complex machinery could give him enough of an advantage to render the enemy's defenses useless before they could fortify themselves excessively.

Orders:
Move to 19,-6 then attack the city walls.

because Irony owl was late, I used the move he specified last time, but was unable to do so.
irony owl  keep in mind you can specify moves for a few turns in advance (given that you think you know exactly what will happen)

((For the next, uh, few turns Alexis is gonna move east along after having equipped his troops.

With that settled there will be more time for text.))

"Halt, men!"

A murmur spread through the ranks. Marching through the hilly ground was hard enough as it were, and another interruption from that Duke guy surely didn't help.

"We are turning back. We head to Home Rocke."

The men were in disbelief. What was the pompous git talking about?

"I notice you are incredulous, soldiers. But take my word, this march will be worth it. A loyal man of the King and upholder of the Church has decided to favour us with the gift of fine horses. Our benefactor has already sent them to our mighty citadel, where they merely await us!"

Approval made it's way through the army, if one could call it that. Even though the men were annoyed to the brink of rage by the impossibly twisty and fancy way their commander talked, they could appreciate something to easen their travels. So they marched.

This defeat was crushing, but not unpredictable. Yet Arthur had no choice but to persevere. He had assessed the enemy general, and now knew that he wasn't all too much out of his league. He would just need to get some fresh men, as these ones were in no more fighting shape.

Orders:
Return to my city (Serenade) and replace the unit with a fresh one.
