Screw pumps
« on: May 25, 2010, 05:38:39 pm »

I notice a lot of other dwarfen gods here like to make screw pumps to pump out the magma to an area, or use water to flood areas.

For me, I found that digging a workshop area off to the side of a magma vent works pretty well, even if it is a long walk to get there... and I ponder how to get a straight set of pipes up 100 zlevels to an area close to where the rest of the fortress is.

What are the general strategies for this, and does anyone have any screen shots of their new magma lake/magmafall, or water falls created over a dining area?

I have ideas on how the results could be visualized, but I find it difficult to build wells/waterfalls in decent locations in my fortress simply because I never plan for that ahead of time.

That gives some basic designs for pumps. The 40d one has slightly more precise pictures, while the 2010 one is easier to understand.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

A word to the wise: if you love FPS, don't pump magma up 100 levels in one go!
