If I may, I would like one of the ones with basic fighting skills (preferably sword)
Name: Ogini Ayotnom
Gender: Doesn't really matter
Background: (I'm just going to use 'he' instead of 'he/she') His father was an excellent weaponsmith. Because of his renowned abilities, a noble goblin with a deformed hand requested that he make a sword specifically for his hand-shape. When the noble came to collect the sword, he refused to pay Ogini's father the agreed upon price. Therefore his father refused to sell it. In anger, the noble killed his father. He has since dedicates his life to becoming the greatest swordsman and avenge his father.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

27th Haematite, 70, Later in the Afternoon

"Sheget's breath, you weren't kidding about the water, were you?" Ago said, staring disconsolately at the mug in front of him.

"It's what we have," Goxa said with a shrug.  "Take it or leave it.  So why were you headed for this gods-forsaken firehole, anyway?"

"We needed a new base," Ago explained, "and right now the woods are crawling with elves."  He and several of his slaves shuddered at the mention of the foul creatures.  "Nako's a weaponsmith, and a fine one at that.  The firehole means we don't have to worry about fuel for smelting or forge work.  Plus we're pretty close to a route other raiders use when they're trying to keep out of the way of the elves.  I assumed that's why you ended up here."

"Frankly, it was the only warm place we could see for miles," Goxa admitted.  "We're rather settled in now, though.  As I said topside, we've got weapons too.  So why should we make room for you?"

"You said you've got weapons," said a female goblin with emerald skin and carmine hair.  Goxa took her to be Nako.  "You didn't say you've got anyone who can make more of them.  Well, we don't have weapons, but we can use them, and we've got me.  You've got shelter and the firehole, we've got the know-how to use it.  Unless you plan on wasting valuable iron 'practising'?"  Nako gave Goxa a grimace that was somewhere between a smile and a snarl.

"Slaves would be good, boss, if we're staying here a while," Uzulek suggested.

"We're nobody's slaves," snapped Nako.  "Ago and I have our own slaves."

"He meant pooling our slaves," Goxa said smoothly.  "Didn't you, Uzulek?"

"Actually, no," said Uzulek.  He took a moment to enjoy the way Nako's eye started twitching in rage before continuing; "But not that, either.  What I meant was that if we do pool together, make some decent weapons and iron out some discipline...  you said we're near a raid route, yes?"

"Yes," Ago confirmed.

"Well, then," Uzulek said with a gleaming yellow grin.  "Once we're armed, we can get slaves, can't we?"

It took a few moments for the details to dawn, but once they did a murmur of cackling broke out across the table.  Even a couple of the slaves joined in despite themselves.

--------

I've added profiles to the main page for the moment.  Will likely do something involving Yilmug and Ogini (groan at the reference!) next post.

Also, a bit of a straw poll, what sort of weapons should we train our militia with?

Poor Ozo. His usefulness decreased.

Not that he cares, really, as long as he can work in the forge.

Looks like we're going with individual choice for the most part - broad range of options.  I'll do an update tomorrow based on the first training session.  Or rather, how the first training session would go if training wasn't bugged.  Right now, half of them are standing on an ice floe trying to 'individual combat drill', with no idea of how to accomplish it.  >_<

Also, updates this weekend will be thin on the ground due to certain girlfriend related commitments.  >_>

Try reducing the required amount of soldiers for training on the schedule screen.

The new military system looks like it's incredibly useful, but its menu is a labyrinthine maze to get through.

Correction, it WILL be incredibly useful once it stops being so fucking bugged.

5th Malachite, 70

"I wanted spears," Uzulek growled.  "Soldiers should have spears."

"Well, we're used to our own weapons," Nako said with a calm, slightly snide voice.  She dipped the scimitar's blade into the nearby bucket of oil to cool and placed her tongs back on the anvil.

"Spears would be cheaper," Uzulek pointed out.

"Well, tell you what, when you and your brave boys nab us some new slaves, then we can talk about spears."  Nako picked up a fresh bar of iron from the pile.  "So, do you want a spear of your very own?"

"Bollocks to that," Uzulek snorted.  "Make me a frigging halberd."

-----

"I don't think I've seen such a sorry bunch of miscreants since the last time I had to work with anyone else," Kiku cackled as he looked over the band of would-be slavers.  The various goblins had all been freshly equipped with weapons by Nako, plus whatever leather armour Goxa could scrabble together from trollhide.  Still, with the lack of a real uniform and each with a different weapon, they looked less like a disciplined fighting unit and more like a desperate rabble.

"You," he said, gesturing with his whip at a female goblin leaning on what looked like a sledgehammer.  "You look like you might actually know your way around that.  What's your name?"

"Yilmug," the goblin replied in a thick accent.  "Zey call me ze Butcher."

"Is it because you're a butcher?" Kiku asked flatly.

"No, is because I kill human family as zey cower in ze home, zen stake ze bodies in a variety of amusink poses.  Get much laugh back at raider camp, very ha ha."  Yilmug sniffed.  "Also, I am butcher."

"You're right, that is funny," Kiku chuckled.  He pointed at the weediest looking goblin of the bunch, a lanky crimson-haired figure trying to keep the longsword he was holding from falling out of his fingers.  "You, stringy.  What makes you think you can stand up to the Butcher here?"

"My name is Ogini Ayotnom," the little goblin began to babble.  "My father was a great-"

"Hey, hey, hey!" Kiku said, cracking the whip for measure.  "I didn't ask for your life story, sunshine.  Sheget's noseless maw, that's a convoluted name.  Do you at least have some sort of vaguely threatening nickname we can call you?"

"Well, I..." Ogini stumbled, "I was a fish dissector?"

"Great," Kiku groaned, running a palm over his face.  "We'll call you if we run into a deadly school of carp on this glacier, shall we?  What makes you think you can fight in my squad, anyway?"

"You forcibly drafted me on pain of lashing."

"Well, yes," Kiku agreed, smiling happily at the memory.  "But why should I actually train you to fight instead of using you as a whipping post to listen to your highly entertaining cries of agony?"

"My father was a great-"

Crack!

"What did I just say about life stories, Fishcakes?!"

"My father made swords," Ogini said sulkily, licking the bleeding gash on his forearm.  He appeared to be doing his best not to break into tears.

"My father made soap, you don't see me indulging in personal hygiene, do you?"  Kiku suddenly grinned.  "Speaking of hygiene, you don't look nearly sweaty enough.  Must be all this cold air out here.  So listen up, you slugs!  Courtesy of Master Ayotnom's lip here, you can all give me twenty laps of this godsforsaken glacier!  And make sure to thank him personally for it later!"

Kiku let out a soft cackle as the other squad members turned dark glares on the unfortunate fishery worker.  Insults, browbeating and a bit of literal beating to watch later.  This whole 'commander' lark might prove entertaining after all.

Ummm...goblin spears. Perhaps give Ogini a self-forged sword for flavor though.

Skrunge broke the wall, it became rocks. It was good to dig again, it worked his massive muscles, and then he could haul rocks. Uot side the others got ready to raid for slaves, they would get there own weapons. Skrunge wanted an iron club with narled iron spikes on it. Maybe if he dug a bit deeper he might find one. Skrunge hauled the rocks.

The memoirs of Zom Halfear, Booksmang
1st Galena, 70

It is our sixth month in this ice-hole in the middle of nowhere and we have recently come into cohabitation with a rival gang.  I say rival because it is clear that neither group trusts the other.  We do not mix, we do not meet each other alone, we even take turns at the watering hole.  In other words, all is as it should be.

The trolls keep me in an ample enough supply of parchment, and I make do with a sort of ground obsidian dust from the edge of the firehole for making ink.  The master has set aside a room for me to work in, just a table and chair, and all the noise from construction I could possibly desire.  Fantastic.  As much as my fellow slaves and even the frees try to disturb me, I am resolute in my filing.

Work continues apace on digging out fresh rooms from the ice and rock, but I hear grumblings from the frees that there isn't enough iron in the vein they cleared.  Work on a bridge has begun to span the firehole, as the path around its edge is precarious at best.

16th Galena, 70

The master tells me that Uzulek has spotted something while scouting.  A train of travellers, heavily armed.  Our rading crew is taking what weapons we have and going out to meet them.

-----

Most of the distant train held back when they spotted the approaching goblins.  A sole figure walked out to them across the snow, gilt with copper armour and a pair of copper crossbows.

"Ho there," said the figure with a cheerful grin, cocking the pair of crossbows at the foremost of the raiding party.

"Ho yourself," growled Uzulek.  "What brings you here?"

"Short cut," the goblin replied curtly.  "We take this one every few months.  Have to pack extra supplies, but it saves a month if you're moving between the forest and the dwarven outposts.  And since I'm the one holding the bows, what brings you here?"

"Holy pilgrimage," lied Goxa, a little out of breath from having had to run to catch up with the raiders.  He brushed down his shirt and stepped toward the front of the group.  Uzulek gave him an incredulous look and rolled his eyes in exasperation.

"Holy pilgrimage, huh?" asked the goblin, raising an eyebrow.  "What's so holy about a firepit?"

"Ah, well," Goxa blagged with, "this particular firepit happens to be the very mire from which Sheget Wanderbreached herself escaped, may Her fire forever burn hot!"  Goxa's smile blossomed into a full-on manic grin.  "We have travelled here in homage of Her magnificence, aiming to build a shrine atop the firepit worthy of Her patronage."

"Uh-huh," said the goblin, looking a touch disturbed by Goxa's expression.

"Perhaps we can interest you in a sermon?" Goxa demanded, beginning to gesticulate wildly.  "How about a pamphlet?  We can have the bookslave draft you one up!"

"Uh, no," the goblin replied, taking a step back.  "Thank you, that's... perfectly fine.  Ahem.  Not that I have a problem with Sheget Wanderbreached, of course," he added quickly, looking up to the heavens with a cringe, "but I really have so many pamphlets already as it is...  I don't suppose you happen to have any supplies, though?  We can always use a little extra something between raids."

"As it just so happens, we might have something - if you're willing to trade."  Goxa's manic grin settled down into a far more welcoming smile.  "Why don't we step into the igloo and discuss terms?"

Giving him a wary look, the goblin holstered his crossbows loosely.  He nodded.  "Alright.  Name's Snang, by the by.  Snang Terrorsoil."

"Goxa Malignedtwists," said Goxa, "and I think this could be the start of a very profitable relationship."

--------------

Edit:  Things may turn out to be 'interesting' here.  The 'raider captain' I thought I'd set up to work as a trader does ratify trade agreements, but I'm not sure if I'll actually get trader caravans like I did playing goblins in 40d.  Editing the raws in the save file probably won't work either, as I think civ prefs get set at world gen.

So quite possibly we might have to get by without any trade at all!  That should prove entertaining.
