If we instituted a draft, and focused on weapons production, then only China could stand against us The United States of America. But instituting a draft and focusing on weapons production is somthing we should try to avoid. Also, if I recall correctly, Iraq is indeed spelled Irak in French.

Oh good, now the thread's devolved into milwanking about wars that nobody with power (or a brain in their head) wants to fight.  Can we get some Tom Clancy quotes up in here?  Maybe some of those defense contractor infomercials with the early 90s production values?  (yeah, you know what I'm talking about)  Oh, and let's not forget the more-hooah-than-thou-ism.

"Us?"

It becomes easy to equate yourself with your country after a while.

Du verdammter Depp, nobody cares about French.

Didn't you have a draft when you fought Vietnam? And it was in the cold war so you were focusing on weapon production in a big way AFAIK... How'd that work out again, I forget? :P

We won the cold war, and lost the will to fight in Vietnam
 because of the media?

I think the US's inability to win the Vietnam war was because of more than just the media. Implying that you didn't lose the war but the media made you quit is a bit simplistic. The point I'm making is that it seems to be an American cultural thing to assume your military is nigh undefeatable, the single greatest fighting force to ever grace the earth... when it really isn't.

The politics of  the time also had alot to do with it.

The USA may have the greatest conventional army ever - but today's wars no longer work like that.
Guerilla defeated Napolean, it defeated the USA in Vietnam, it defeated the Russians in Afghanistan - that shows that being a superpower means jack shit.
Except for literally killing the entire population, there are no viable ways to combat guerilla yet.

That being said, Guerilla wars are political clusterfucks. This faction receives support by the USA, whilst it is being combated by the China supporters who are allied by the autonomous fascist nationalistic group, which is combating the die-hard socialist party…

So do I. And while I wouldn't pretend watching documentaries on the history channel make me any kind of expert, I'm fairly confident it had a lot to do with the inexperience of the drafted soldiers, problems with morale, the enemy being on their own turf, etc...

Guerrilla wars has been won. It's simple, without help from the population, guerrilla dies.

I was simply pointing out that America's army is wasteful (700 billions dollars for the war in Iraq alone, massive use of private contractor aka mercenaries.), undisciplined (when you compare it with full professional army) and that it seems to be outfitted with equipment chosen with politic and economics in mind rather then efficiency. (for instance M16 is far inferior the FAMAS, F2000, and other modern assault rifle. Hummer were used in patrols, when this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iveco_LMV for instance is designed for it.)
All these flaws has been exploited to defeat massive but underused army before.
Just look at the French army on the beginning of WW2 for instance. It was supposed to be the best army of the world. Or so the French thought....

Edit : I love how in the beginning of every wars, the county involved are alway saying that the war shall be quick and easy. Yeah. And some still believe it....

I'd point out that during the American Revolutionary War, the smaller American forces fought as guerillas against the British. They even complained about how we weren't following the proper rules of war (lining up across the battlefield, etc). Unless I'm just misremembering the quote. But the guerilla part I'm solid on. It's pretty much why we won many of our battles.

If you take away guerilla's popular support they'll wither away. If you're unscrupulous enough, this can be done with false flag operations.

But if you fail one of those (they discover the operation) you're quite screwed. I'd imagine a lot of civilians would pledge more support against the attacker, even joining the guerillas. Guerillae?
