Do you use magma?
« on: May 24, 2010, 03:02:04 pm »

That's very simple question, people.

Also, why you use/don't use magma?

I'm up for challenge of course! ^^ What's more challenging that sudden lack of fuel while you need 10x Iron bolts for your marksdwarfs and full suits of armor for new recruits?

You need to venture outside and cut trees, or dig frantically for coal. Watch as your military back-ups the woodcutters who have to make wood surrounded by possible ambushing goblins and wild animals!

And sieges? That means flying bodyparts, blood and tears as your veteran dies after slaughtering 30 gobbos, and then it's national mourning day for your fortress.

With magma? No need for fuel + magma showers. Pfft. That's cheap.

your questions seem to paint magma users as people who like it easy, fuel for metalwork's is easy, it just takes longer.
Magma is also hard for some people who don't know how to move it around effectively, and those who want to use it in fun devices.

I however do use magma because it makes me not need fuel, allowing me to do things in a timely fashion, and as a dump for things i don't wish to bother with any more (elves, cats, silly immortal monsters)

I use magma becuase it lives deep. I generally make my forts in the caverns and I seem to get lucky with magma pools. I need my wood for beds, barrels, bins and training bolts.

Wood is also used for water wheels, axels, and windmills.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

I prefer to think of us as "people who don't want to dig a 140 z level shaft, only to have a forgotten beast walk up it and butcher our entire fort"

This. Nobody makes you leave your fortress open to the caverns.

Ironically, you could vaporize said fb with proper application of magma. At least I think it's irony. I'm not very good with that...

They're actually a special ore. Instead of being mined, they're hunted from between the trees and instead of producing metal, they produce food: rhesus pieces.
