Convert .CMV to something windows can view?
« on: May 23, 2010, 04:05:33 pm »

Hey guys, for my end of class project is on Dwarf Fortress and I'm trying to find a way to record dwarf fortress play so that I can play it in a power point presentation. Are there any known converters out there that will change a cmv to something like a .avi or .wmv so that it can be played in PPP. I know there is a flash player but that doesn't do me a whole lot of good since I am limited to a 10 slide power point only :P If I can't find anything I guess I'll have to use something like fraps to capture the entire screen but that seems like a lot more trouble. Thanks for any info you guys can give me!

He wants a movie, not a screenshot.

He's doing a 10 slide powerpoint though?  Can you even embed video into powerpoints?

You can embed video into powerpoint. However, he might have to consider whether the computer he uses to actually present it on is able to play it back. As for the rest, sorry OP, fraps might be your best bet.

Yah like said above you can put videos into a slide, I have done a lot of screen shots but I'd like to have a video of a combat scene in the arena just to show what the game looks like in play.

Use fraps or something like that to record video?

You could also just nick some exsiting videos, feel free to get one from balthazars arena ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAHxDKL6Wis&feature=related

I may just have to do that I'm afraid. FRAPS isn't working out to well, the videos that it records are very slow. I suspect this is do to the nature of dwarf fortress. I'm trying to record the intro scene and when I play it back it takes like 5 minutes to play out :P Mostly due to my crappy computer I'm guessing. I will have to just nick youtube videos and dump them in lol. At least this one has good music, my class will like that.

I wonder how all the people on Youtube are recording their videos ? Are not youtube videos .flv files? I can convert .flv to .wmv. How are they converting them to .flv files from .cma files :P Does the flash video tool actually convert the .cma to .flv or just it just play .cmv files in a flash window? I'm super confused now.

Why not stop the powerpoint, switch to the DF window, and show some real-time DF? Either way (video/DF) you'll need to test beforehand on the projector computer.

This is what I do:

* Record video in fraps
* Open it in Virtual dub, cut out some pointless parts (i.e when i target creature in v menu)
* Change codec to something sane (xvid, h2something), add soundtrack and save it.

Now I have decent quality video that takes about 8mb per minute, which I upload to youtube.

No cmv usage at all.

The problem with that is if the OP is using school computer and is not allowed to download anything to it.

In which case, DF runs just peachy (if slow during loads and saves) from a USB thumb drive...  :)
