What's so special about fortresses?

+ they make it so any attack on your units has to basically expose itself to fire
+ In order to take the walls they have to tickle up up ropes 5ish men at a time.
+ If you have calvary you can run them out and the way the AI attacks they expose a lot of units to flank attacks.

- THEY LAG SHIT TO FUCK especially in DM with its large unit sizes

And they also have the downside of occasionally freezing all your units in place randomly. Resulting in the enemy simply walking past them and capping the center, ending my campaign 3 turns in.

As Amsterdam waited for an opening, the other theaters were far from quiet...

In the East Indian trade theater, for example, Jan Van Der Crabben(Awesome Name) sailed against a pirate warlord by the name of Fredrico Calles.


Despite the ships in the warlords fleet being stronger then his sixth rates and brig, they were heavily damaged and he hoped this would give him the strenght to break them.


The battle started as a line manuevers but it wasn't long before it broke into a melee, and the first victory was had as a Xebec surrendered.


The next victory was had when a 6th rate fired a close range broadside into the second xebec, causing it to surrender.


Finally, the 5th rate was sunk, by no less then the brig. (Thats just embarrassing!)


One Xebec was captured in the battle and was added to the fleet.. the fleet immediatly set course for Ceylon, needing Repairs and Rearming.

In America, the colonial army visited Trinidad & Tobago to receive reinforcements...


..before setting sail for the windward isles...


Upon landing they quickly went about marching against the french garrison...


It began with a medium range firefight between the dutch and french militia as the line infantry moved into position.


They then moved to close range so their weight of fire was heavier...


The French responding by charging Dutch lines.


Which was responded in turn by a Dutch bayonet charge...


Which of course had the effect of making the french think "Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to live in the Dutch empire" And they promplty routed.


With the victory at Martinique, it was clear that the dutch were winning the war in the colonies, but this would be meaningless if they couldn't route the french in Europe..


The army thus far had retreated to Amsterdam to fortify their position, and so far the french hadn't made any moves, knowing that any assault would be bloody and would likely mean defeat until the Dutch army could be whittled down and broken.

Meanwhile the Dutch used the relative non-existence of the french navy to get small trade fleet past France, and on its way to Africa...


While an agent by the name of Willem Ganesvoort ran across french territory with a small mobile force of men, sacking small towns and burning down important buildings.


Then in 1704, the Dutch got their opening as the Prussians made their presence known in this war and took Hanover from the french.


The dutch wasted no time, they needed this and they weren't gonna let it go to waste, and the army quickly marched on Cologne.

I knew Prussia had it in them. In my Prussian game, I currently control most of Europe as well as NA and Caribbean colonies. So yeah, they're pretty powerful.

Battle report of General Hendrick Van Nassau-Ourwerkerk

I am happy to report, sir, that I have achieved victory over the french near Cologne, it was a long a brutal battle, but thanks to the valour of several specific units we achieved victory, it is my hope that this battle will secure our independence and give us the ability to achieve dominance over our Rivals.

The battle started pretty usual, with our cannons ripping into the french formations as they marched against us, I had ordered my men to fire on the enemy cavalry due to them being bigger targets and the likely hood of their general riding in one of these units.

The enemy decided to probe our defenses with a unit of light cavalry, but this unit was quickly met with musket and canister shot and was easily routed before it even , the  Second french cavalry unit held back and didn't engage, I assume this was the French General's unit.

Soon after the enemy infantry begin to move into range, these were met by canister shot at first, of which you must send thanks to the boys in Utrecht for coming up with this stuff.

As they moved into musket range my men immediately began pouring fire into them and I noticed that the french were focusing heavily on our right flank while using several units to anchor our left, One particular unit marched right up to our cannons on the left and began a melee, our Cannon-Guard pikes immediately broke spear wall and charged them, routing them before heading onto another unit to give our cannons more room to reorganize.

Thanks to the weight of fire on the right flank, and the efforts of pikemen we managed to route most of the enemy, one unit of french infantry remained though and tried to  hold the line so that the rest of the french could regroup, I sent runners to target them with Cannons and soon there was cannon rain all around them, causing them to route.

This just left a unit of cavalry belonging to the supposed french general, who was skirmishing with our men and dodging cannon shells, I quickly sent a runner to the left flank, of which I ordered an infantry regiment to attach bayonets and route them, a job which they did well. With the routing of this unit the french were completely broken and we were able to march into Cologne with little resistance.

I would like to give praise to several units in this battle, whose valor and skill possibly won this battle.

The two Cannon regiments, the unit I had placed center-line especially for racking up at least five-hundred kills.  Though I still give praise to the second unit of cannon on the right flank, for despite getting charged by infantry, still managed to get over three hundred kills.

I would also like to give praise to one of the units of conscripts for their over three hundred kills.

Finally, praise to the right flank of pike-men, which racked up an impressive five hundred kills. They say that pike-men are outdated, especially with the new bayonets, but I am of a firm belief that they still have their uses.

Now I must rest, I am very old and my time is near, I Hope that whoever you choose as my replacement can help bring a Dutch empire, not just in America or India, but in Europe too, I offer good luck in the war against Bavaria and Wurtenburg, also.  To the republic, I urge you to pursue peace with France while you can, they are weak and we cannot afford further campaigns against them, a white peace could be gotten...

In the Caribbean, Jabobus Bloemaert(Asehujiko) had been sieging pirate forces for sometime now and they finally decided to sally against the Dutch Colonial Army,


The Dutch had plenty of time, however to set up a fortified defense.


The pirate mobs marched anyways, despite the excellent odds that they would be horribly mutalated by musket balls.


Upon coming in range they formed primitive battle lines and started firing.


However, the Dutch quickly went about decimating their lines on the dutch left, the pirates on the right, however held firm.


Once the Pirates on the left were routed the infantry wrapped around the remaining pirates and then every unit in the army attached plug bayonets.


And charged.


Utterly surrounding the pirates and causing massive casualties.


An thus piracy was forever vanquished from the world.  Indeed, the future cargo ship crews will thank us for our efforts this day, as they relax without the threat of being boarded and held hostage.

Back home, Herbert Kobels takes comand of the main army.


He brings with him a shipment of ring bayonets, which will replace the plug bayonets currently being used, this will surely give us an advantage in future wars, as well as our current one with Bavaria and Württemberg.

Fight Vs Bavaria and a rest to war.

In mid 1708, a French Gentleman poking around Ulrect got shot by our resident natural philospher, this will teach those French bastards to try and get in on OUR SCIENCE.

This wasn't nearly as important as the war with Wurttemberg and Bavaria, and as the winters of 1708 the Army marched into an undefended Stuttgart, but took numerous casualties and had to back at the report of a bavarian army.

So, seeing as the Austrians were still warring with the French it was decided to hand over the city over to our allies with the hope they could continue their war against France and wear them down for Future wars.

Not long after, Pautwel van Steenwijck was elected as Stadtholder, though his retinue was meh at best.

As the winter made way for 1709 a Bavarian army was spotted on the borders.

As spring came the army marched, the Bavarians in the mean time were shooting up the countryside, The dutch meant for this to stop, so began a battle.

The Bavarians had an unhealthy obsession with cannons, fixed cannons, which were quickly abandoned by them in favor of more defensible terrain, the Dutch Calvary exploited this and charged the enemy cannons.


As the Calvary went down the Bavarian cannon line the army was marching, two line formation, towards the Bavarian army.


Pulling close to musket range the Bavarians quickly moved into musket range, the the Cavalry meanwhile had routed all of the enemy cannons, and was down pulling back to rest, but Bavarian mercenery cavalry was hot on their tails.


Soon the entire line erupted in a firefight, the Bavarians were relatively disorganized but put up a good fight, the Dutch moved to bring several reserve units around to flanks them, while a melee broke out between the Dutch and Bavarian horse, the Bavarians won vs the tired horse...


... However as the Bavarians moved into flanking position they were met by fresh, experianced provincial cavalry and routed.


Soon the Bavarians grew tired of shooting and getting shot at and charged, right onto brand spankin' new ring bayonets.


And proceded to get decimated, though the fight lasted for sometime longer, the battle was mainly a cleanup after this.


The Bavarians had lost almost 2,200 men compared to the Dutch's 600, a true sign of the Dutch prowess in battle.

Not long after the victory the remaining Bavarian troops on dutch territory were run down and destroyed, realizing they were defeated, and the Dutch not wanting to overextend themselves, White peace was signed.
