.04 - Worth it?
« on: May 23, 2010, 07:55:40 am »

So, I've been reading the .04 thread and it seems like people are having a lot of problems, especially with graphics mode (which I thought was going to be the biggest improvement).  I haven't upgraded yet.  Should I?

It is free, you know. Downloading it and testing it out would probably help you make up your mind quicker than people can respond, especially since it's been about an hour.

A number of other small bugs (mostly related to healthcare) were also fixed but not mentioned. It may take some getting used to, to play without a graphics tileset if you are used too it (It took me a few hours to get comfortable myself) however mechanically it is definitely superior.

This pretty much.

It's faster and the bugfixes are nice as well.  Getting used to no graphics isn't that big of a deal since you can get about half of them by replacing the art files with the graphics set and just changing it to use those without graphics on.  You lose a few things like ground and creature appearences but it didn't take me that long to get used to.

As far as the other problems other then graphics?  Haven't experienced thosed and I'm on year 2 of my current fort with a working military and everything so far.

Use the legacy version for all the goodness of the gameplay fixes without any graphics bugs. Obviously this has no png support, zoom, macros or any of the other stuff but it is much more stable and playable (imo) than the full .04 version.

Considering that it's the first version of DF2010 that runs on my computer, I'd say that it was very much worth the download.

Actually I don't get to spend enough time playing.  It's more useful to me to get a feel from others, than to spend my time trying out to tell.

Since I run Linux, it's infinitely worth it.

The bugfixes, while minor, are nice to have.

I prefer text over graphics, as it communicates information more quickly and with better fidelity.  (After you learn what the symbols mean, of course.)  So I don't mind not having the graphics stuff.

I didn't expect a framerate boost, as I have a high-end computer with a very high-end graphics card.  Despite that, my framerates went up by maybe a third.  Very welcome.

I want to use the built-in macro system, but can't figure it out.  I know how to record, play, save, and load, but I want to bind macros to e.g. Alt-Enter and can't figure out how.  So that's a wash.

Overall, yes.

What are you talking about? Unless you're playing the old _old_ version (40d#), your saves will transfer.

I am pretty surprised by the resolution increase.

I will go blind late at night playing.  It was kind of nice to have everything so big when my eyes were bloodshot and I *should* be sleeping but you know... cancels sleep and all that...

Hmmm. No graphics or random non-intended acid rain that kills your fortress. Hmm....
