Sometimes I spend half my day in conversations where my only contributions are the occasional "yeah"s and "uh-huh"s. I used to avoid doing this because I know I would feel bad if someone wasn't really listening to what I was explaining, but most of the time the other person seems satisfied simply telling me whatever the hell they did in that game they found on that certain website, or the summary of some movie they saw a few years ago.

Sometimes it's also an ego thing, as the context includes how much better they are than most others. Perhaps you can feel better if you cut them off from stroking their egos.
