I had one of those police officer visits to my school when I was little to teach my grade 6 class about why drugs are bad. He kept talking about how enjoyable they were but that we had to resist anyhow. He also told us that we shouldn't roll joints, but if we did, we should at least know how to do it properly.

Officer Ron was probably the worst cop ever, but he made for a great school in-joke.

I understand that you waste less with pipes (since, unlike tobacco, it doesn't keep burning in the bowl), but I've had no experience with joints, though I did smoke blue lotus (which contains mild psychoactive chemicals) mixed with pipe tobacco once, which was nice (and legal), if what I felt wasn't just the nicotine (it felt different than a heavy nicotine buzz: no nausea or weakness, just a relaxing stupor, though it passed as quickly as nicotine (about two minutes or so), although there was barely any left, split between four people).

I prefer alcohol to pot, though. Cheaper, easier to get, legal, feels better... only drawback is the liver damage, which is nothing a little taurine won't fix.
