If we can just get 50% of those men in Wigs and wearing halter tops and pumps the community should be able to function normally until the women can produce a more even number females.

Oh wait, who am I kidding? If we can just get 50% of those men out of Wigs, halter tops, and pumps.

Why should we pretend to be something else? More importantly, have you ever met a truly normal person? They're scary. They're obese with three and a half fat kids in their minivan as they're on thier way to McDonalds for breakfast. *shudders*

Unlikely to find one in a self-pronounced group of nerds.

Note that I'm not trying to degrade you or your idea here, but i would like to understand the why of it.

>_>

Not to put myself on a pedestal, but when it comes down to it I can lead.

As far as the why?  Because it would be awesome.
I vote for Vector. Being able to hand your ass to you is an importnant quality as a leader, and no offense, but being female might help to.

Another option is to get a warehouse like space and build solid wall sections to divide off personal bedroom spaces, leaving the majority open for general use (parties and general sitting around in one area, workshop space in the back). This way, the living psaces can have entrances that don't face each other because they're kind of scattered. And the shared living space is large enough that each person could just use some of it if they wanted.

Again, you'd have to get people together who were willing to work at it to keep the place clean and such. But each person's share of that rent would be much smaller than a one-bedroom apartment and you'd get all that shared living space.

This puts you in the city, where you can have access to tech and such. And if you pick the right place, you could do a greenhouse thing for a food garden.

This also runs you straight afoul of zoning laws.  There are no apartments in the middle of industrial parks; it's not because people don't want to live there, it's because people can't live there.

Let's do the Time Warp, and remember who we're talking about here.  A bunch of nerds who don't want to drive very far to find an electronics store, have little money, fewer unique job skills, and very little experience at any kind of self-sufficient living.  A considerably more practical option is just finding an apartment, boarding house, or motel with an owner looking to sell (probably in a grungy area so it's cheap), buy it all wall it up, and hope you managed to do this in a city with a growing tech-industry center for employment.

Not that living as far as possible from the uninitiated doesn't have its charms.  If the "rural commune" idea is going to be batted around with theoretically infinite capital on the table, you might as well buy an old missile silo and fix that up.  For the panache.

Guys, Waterloo, Ontario, is just like this. Everybody works at Blackberry and is nerdy all the time.

If we're looking for a windy place near a lot of tech development, Puget Sound in Washington state is a fairly nice place.

Why not just terraform and engineer our own space? Building a nerd kingdom on an artificial island chain would be sweet.

Why did I not read this earlier?

Really, this type of idea works with outdoorsy, independent, survival oriented people the best

Sounds like me.

Anyway, I would definitely help out with something like this.
I would be perfectly willing to perform the manual labour required to erect a few structures, not alone, obviously.
Here're a few o' my thoughts:
We live in or near enough to a city to offer cheap and friendly electronic help, like repairs and such.
The televised commune idea suggested earlier may also work out well.
Create a website hosting members' webcomics, podcasts, whatever, and video clips of crazy stuff that happens has great potential for profit.
If we produce more energy than we use (ha!) we can also make a profit.
I'm an advocate of bicycle style generators.
Produce electricity and get your daily exercise.
A farm would also be useful, however, I feel fruits are a better choice than vegetables, so we'd need to be able to grow them.
I'm an advocate of an outdoor area, maybe with a roof over it, for eating/DnD/whatever.
The dorms could be built as a sort of windblock to keep all your character sheets from blowing away.
Maintenance could be done on a volunteer basis.
I'm sure some people will be willing to help.
I know I wouldn't mind mopping the bathrooms.
I wouldn't be cleaning toilets though.
Alternatively, if money ends up not being much of an issue, we could always hire janitors.
New buildings could be added on an as wanted, if money basis.

I am seriously considering doing this. One question: would cats be allowed?  :P

Well, if we do something kind of segmented, we could have a split where pets can be on one side and not the other.
