There's three ways to augment difficulty from what I've seen
-Augmenting Size
-Altering materials to be stronger
-Adding layers.

I've made a demonic cave spider. Its a terrible sight to behold. Gave steel-harderned chitin. It wasn't enough - so I gave him THREE Layers of it. It was damn unbeatable. Eventually I reduced it to two.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Its like having to get past 3 armor sets.

I may just have to try this.

On a related note I think I just finished the raw for the Bulette, but I've yet to test it in the arena. Do you recommend any baseline tests I should perform?

I know this is only vaguely related to the task at hand, but has anyone noticed just how many monsters from the first couple of editions of D&D attack by bursting unexpectedly out of the ground, and menacing adventurers?

... interested as to whether you can get mushroom-men to work like tree ents.

Do you mean so that they can be "based" on different types of tree? Nah, the tag that the ents used in the last version no longer works - Toady put a note about it in the entry for Wagons. But, I mean there's only six mushrooms, so you could easily make a single Mushroom Man creature, and different castes for each type.
Might be fun to speculate as to what each mushroom man's unique abilities might be...

Yea - here's the tests I do.

Load it up in arena, check errorlog for anything suspiscious.
Spawn creature, spawn goblin/dwarf to test power.
Spawn creature, spawn armed dwarf. Assume control (of the dwarf D:).
Spawn cluster, more dwarves.
Spawn cluster, armed dwarf, assume control
Check if they drown in water, burn in magma.
Check how long they last against a megabeast.
Have a bulette stampede.

There's other ways to menace hapless adventurers? Do tell.

Sadly I know the Bulette's signature moves include tunneling as well as leaping great heights into the air but I can't implement them. I know the first one is impossible in the current DF...

...and the last one would make this a 4-ton binge drinking, binge eating, dwarf smashing, shark ballerina... in short it would be perfect for Dwarf Fortress.

I wish we could give it a preference for certain kind of meat.
aka: gnome meat.

Hey guys. Mithril. I've got a superb idea. Rather than having it trees or herbs, or even metal veins... it should be the Demonic GCS's web. Think about it. That thing's hide is as hard as steel, half the size of a dragon, it breaths dragonfirebreath, and also enwebs you with the GCS web attack. Mithril webs would be the perfect way to balance risks vs rewards.

I've started testing and it is giving me : "*** Error(s) found in the file "raw/objects/creature_bulette.txt"
Unrecognized Word Property Token: S"
I can't seem to find a stray 'S' in place of a token anywhere.

Everything else seems fine though, unlike the last time I made a creature this one thankfully spawned with all it's important bits. Until I started playing DF I never though you could spawn a creature without key parts of it's anatomy.

*EDIT: As it's first meal I spawned a gnome...
The Combat Log looks a little something like this:
Gnome 1 attacks Bulette1 but he **jumps away!      **Sharky Ballerina it is then
Bulette 1 bites Gnome1 in the upper body, tearing the skin!
Bulette 1 latches on firmly!
Gnome1 misses Bulette 1!
Bulette 1 charges at Gnome 1!
Bulette 1 scratches Gnome 1 in the right upper leg, tearing the fat!
Bulette 1 collides with Gnome 1!
Gnome 1 is knocked over and tumbles backwards!
Bulette 1 bites Gnome in the lower body, tearing the skin!
Bulette 1 latches on firmly!
Bulette 1 shakes Gnome around by the lower body!
The lower body is ripped away and remains in Bulette 1's grip!
Gnome 1 has been struck down!

I believe it finds gnomes rather tasty.

*EDIT II
A bulette losing it's head just seems to make it mad... this might need to be fixed.

My word, I'm impressed by this.  I didn't realize one could make special materials for a specific creatures's skin/bone/chitin/shell.  I might have to mod the dwarf-pigs I use.

Oh! there's another idea if you want to add to the under-dark civilization.  Though, they might seem a bit cheap as they're animals you can embark with that have shells (saved several of my moody dwarves lives though).

Oh yeah shell animals. I got so tired of 9 out of 10 fey moods needing shell that my legendary steel greaves have cow shell on it.
It might be an idea to give chitin the shell tag. Lobster shell is actualy made of chitin, and we cant tan chitin anymore.
Making a domnestic insectide/arachnide/crustacian would then solve our shell problem.

On the landshark: Theres some tags to place tissues only at certain places of a bodypart, could be useful for the shell. The body detail plan file has some, starting with BP_POSITION. You can also just define this in the creature itself though with [TISSUE_LAYER:BY_TOKEN:(bodypart name):(tissue name):TOP]
TOP can also be FRONT, BACK, SIDES and BOTTOM.

Also an update on expiriments with balancing the armormen:
Tried to improve their attack strength, now they are indestructable again. Only a colossus with a maul managed to kill one. Not what I intended.
In later expriments they set themselves on fire. SOMEHOW. A gauntlet also weighs more then a ton. That was at least amusing.

Reverting changes, trying again.

I like dwarven pigs. Usually its the male who gets horns. I'll mod it so it can be a common wildlife in the upper layer.

Yea, the explanation for the females being the fighters is so that the player really cares for his breeders.  However, since you seem to be a better modder than me, I'll accept whatever changes you make and most likely adopt them.

I hope to see a truly brutal version of the deep pig I posted in the end of the thread.

Not really - I just copy/paste what I need and make the obvious changes. It worked, at least on 40d.

DF2010 is so much more complex with all the materials, layers, body plans, and all.

Deon - I require your permission to add eight different venoms to the beholder - to have it spit poison from its eyestalks!

Ugh. I give up. I gave the tarrasque a copypasta of the dragon's body part. Stantard materials, stantard tissues. Did it work?

Of course not. -_-

TARRASQUE:DEFAULT:upper body: No tissue thickness
TARRASQUE:DEFAULT:lower body: No tissue thickness
I'm done. If someone wants to take over and fix this, I'm gonna post the compilation we got so far.

Ill try and get it to work, along with my some fixes and additions to the armor man. Is the thing you posted above the last version you made?

On armor man changes: Got the whole immortality thing fixed, added some rusty versions, and now im trying to get their weapons poisened. Working out pretty well, except that butchering them yields just a liquid 'item' instead of a poison coating and that the poison is a tad too powerful. I rotted away a dozen elves with it, completely. No corpses left.

Experimenting with poisons never gets old.

No exactly.

This is the latest version.
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2437

Its missing some stuff, supposed to be in Deon's Genesis mod, but was too busy trying to fix mine to search for it.
The Deep Gnomes, Wyrms, and Demonic GCS seems to be fine, but I haven't been able to test them in-game due to Quetzie and Tarrasque.
