Question regarding children and castes.
« on: May 21, 2010, 08:13:49 pm »

What happens when a species with multiple castes has a child? Does the child take on the properties of the caste it will become? Is there any way to caste level mod children?

It should be possible to make kids belong to their castes from birth.

I modded a bird race that can have either black or white feathers. They show the color of their caste from birth.

Gender is a similar proof of this.

So does that mean there is no way to make children NOT belong to their future caste from birth? I remember reading something about that back in the development of 2010 but I'm thinking it wasn't implemented or I misread.

The parents do not determine the caste, I am writing this from experience with playing Deon's Genesis mod. A stone and moss dwarf hit it off, and made a shroom dwarfette. I believe the caste of the child is simply rolled by the RNG based on caste probabilities.

This is a exceptionally prepared stack of 3 vertex. It forms the shape of a triangle.

Yes I know that but what I'm asking is if it is possible to have children have some different characteristics from their own adult form such as more or fewer limbs.

This is pretty much impossible.

Not possible.

What caste a child belongs to is determined by the POP_RATIO token.  If the token is not present, then the castes all have an equal chance of being born (equivalent of all castes having POP_RATIO:1).  It is not possible for a creature to change from one caste to another.

I kind of figured that but I just remembered people talking about it being possible before the release so I was just wondering. Thanks everyone.

If you want stuff like a third arm, you could just make an enormous amount of castes with those small differences, me thinks.
