Best party console, though, since you can easily convince even the most ardent video game avoiders to play with a Wii.

PC:
For most(probably between 95% and 99%, maybe more, even) console games, the programming is done on PC, wheras for a PC game, you can create it on the same sytstem you use to test it.

I say console because even though I have a PC and an Xbox I spend all my time on the PC on forums.

As for the OP, I prefer PC to console. PC has more games, a better control scheme, and is in general easier to work with if you know what you're doing. But that's just me, I also tend to wait a few years for others to sort out which games are worth getting and which are crappy knock offs. Easier to find vintage games for the PC than consoles.

Windows 7 is awesome, runs smooth, and has lots of nifty little improvements. If you know where to look, you can snag an upgrade license for like 20 dollars.

In the end, I encourage people to go PC because it teaches them to maneuver in a technological world with an iota of self-sufficiency. I've taught friends who were computer illiterate to do things like install their own drivers, understand their configuration settings and solve their own problems.

As I was reading this thread, firmly on the fence and with no intention to even go to the effort of voting, I saw this. I think it's a constructive way to look at it, and I agree.

And yeah, Dwarf fortress.

OEM Windows 7? I'd be surprised unless you're buying it under license (like a student license from a university.) But that's without doing any checking.

PC Pros:
Superior for strategy and menu-based games. I don't think I'd ever want to play, say, Dwarf Fortress or Wesnoth or Civilization on a console.
Strong multiplayer for sais games (I usually play hotseat, though, which is steadily being dropped. This fills me with anger.)
Better for mods.

Console:
Cheaper. Dear god, so much cheaper. I can buy a console for under 200 bucks, and play games my $500 computer would never be able to handle.
Better for racing games, fighting games, platforming games.
Better for the class of shooters I actually enjoy playing (2-state movement fills me with anger. I can deal with a bit less accuracy considering how much more comfortable a controller is when compared to a mouse, and how godawful a keyboard is for moving gracefully).
Allows multiple players on one machine (though they have been steadily dropping this amazing feature, which also fills me with anger), and is just all around better for playing with friends.

So, consoles end up winning. But computers have their perks.

The whole "better for...." argument is strictly one of input devices. If consoles shipped standard with keyboard and mouse, we wouldn't even have those discussions. A $25 dollar Logitech controller, and PCs become "as good as..." in all categories.

Consoles, on the other hand, are trying so hard not to become PCs (or appear as them, making users question why they need a console PC) that they'll never be able to accept keyboard and mouse as an option...and so no console games will ever get made that could take advantage of them.

I haven't looked myself. I remember reading about OEM copies of vista a few years ago being around $100. Student licensing also seems to amount to a free copy, from what I've heard, but I never looked into it. Probably varies depending on the arrangement with the college.

Somehow this reminds me of the manergy videos... Anyway I prefer pcs, I've gotten alot more play out of my outdated pc even today than I do out of any of my console/handhelds though thats partially because I don't have the money to buy games. Not to mention theres still plenty of stuff on the internet that the console browsers can't handle still.

I have to disagree here. The base hardware may be cheaper, but the accessories and games tend to be significantly more expensive. Console games drop in price much slower than PC games, generally. In addition, I've never seen the same kind of console game deals that I sometimes see on Steam. (Especially their end of year deals around Christmas and New Year's.) Game companies are also able to set their own prices on the PC rather than having to stick to the console manufacturer's strict 'suggested retail price'. I can almost guarantee you'll never see a console version of the humble indie bundle. I can build a 5-600 dollar computer that will run anything out today. Hell, my 4 year old 800 dollar computer can still hold it's own, although it does need a (very cheap) ram upgrade.
