How to read/search a thread with many pages.
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:17:07 pm »

Since I followed the 0.31.04 work in progress thread since its creation I read A LOT about people
who don't want to read 30+ pages of posts to either:
 - look if a problem already has been reported or
 - find a solution to this problem

Yeah that might be difficult, even though sometimes its only needed to read the last 2-3 pages...
Anyway, in the same thread a user named lizard posted a neat little trick I want to recommend to everyone
who doesn't already know.

On the end of each page of a thread there a several buttons next to the "REPLY" button.
One of them says "PRINT". If you click that you'll get the WHOLE thread on ONE page without pretty colors.
This view is perfect to look for keywords with CTRL+F and very pleasant to read a big thread.

Alternatively for searching:
You can use the search bar on the top left which only searches the thread / subforum you are currently looking at!
(which isn't very common to me)

Example 1: If Im on page 33 in the "The DF 0.31.04 Work-In-Progress Thread" and I type something in the searchbar
and press "Search", only this thread will be searched for keywords.

Example 2: If I look at the threads in the subforum " Dwarf Fortress > DF Modding " and try to search for something,
ALL of the threads in this subforum will be searched.

But then again, its possible to get some pages to browse through though.

Happy Searching/Reading

Holy crap I did not know about that...

Can you imagine reading something like Nist Akath or the old FotF threads that way?  Those are big enough I imagine doing a 'find on page' could almost make a computer comatose.

EDIT: With testing 'for science' on the most recent, 1065 page FotF thread it took 3 minutes to load the page.  Surprisingly it only takes about 2 seconds to run a full text search however.  Either firefox cheats, or massive amounts of text isn't hard for a computer to sift through.

Footkerchief is the son of the forum search. He searched for our sins.

Now he has returned, and the forum will be searched in holy fire.

The Searchture is upon us.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I disagree.
One vote to sticky this tip in the same thread with other forum guides, how-tos, etc..  It's worth stickying, IMO, but we don't want too many stickied threads.

Too many stickies arent good,.. but imho some sticky threads should be moved into another subforum
(like DF Accelerator -> modding) or make a subforum for it (3 sticky threads for Dwarf Talks? -> subforum)
