Try to encourage (don't know if it works with punish) whenever you have more than 3000 gold.
That way you melt the gold into a golden brick, before your hero hast the chance to waste it on some crap.

It happened with punish for me, though I don't think it even melted 3000 coins.

I'm fine with heroes being retarded.  Their entire purpose is to do stupid things in our names, after all.

Plus I'm not even sure if those grades do anything.  I mean, it's Progress Quest 2.  I don't even know if that stuff does anything except add flavor.
