Try talking to your hero when he's fighting.  There's a chance you'll discourage the enemy creature and (hopefully) make them less effective in battle.

...oddly enough, all three times when this actually worked I've used phrases that include the words "kick" and "balls".  I fear there might be a pattern.

"Mud Golem!  Know that my hero's foot is now enchanted +5 vs. your balls!"

Well its 4 AM, I'm halfway to level 7, on my second quest, hit rank 5 on greed, and still have yet to figure out how the bonus appliers on items work (Obviously - is worse then +, but does that make -1 better then -10? And is - better then nothing at all? Or is nothing at all a neutral 0 and better then the shit my guy wears?)
