I know that melting will turn objects into metal bars of the repsective material, but what does melting ores do? is it just like smelting them?

They shout "Oh, what a world, what a world..." a lot.

No, melting =/= smelting. Smelting is a controlled refining process. Melting just turns your ore/rock/bar/whatever to glob if its melting point is below magma's temperature; otherwise the object just sits there uselessly.

I think he's referring to the bug where random crap throughout your fortress will be designated for melting for no apparent reason. Things like socks.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Right now it causes crashes pretty frequently.  You shouldn't be able to melt ore or bars or random things like that, in general melting is only used to turn metal items back into usable metal bars.

I'm assuming the ores in question are native copper, native silver, native gold, native platinum, raw adamantine, and horn silver - for some reason, those ores inherit from METAL_TEMPLATE rather than STONE_TEMPLATE so the game thinks they're metal rather than stone, leading to all sorts of oddities, apparently including this.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
