Dolomite for no other reason than I spent a summer recording and hauling hundred pound slabs of the stuff out of Bronze Age graves in Jordan. It endeared itself to me and to my spine, which has never forgotten. I feel my Dwarves pain...

Extra bonus fun fact, when the Romans were knocking tar out of the area for copper, they'd cut the Achilles tendon on one of the legs of the slaves that they sent down into the mines in order to prevent them from running off, not that they'd get very far in a 130 degree desert but what the hell, you can't be too safe. I fully expect such details to make it into DF Version 1.0.

petrified wood. Its a nifty thing, fairly rare, and a good co9lor when used for building things. also because i want to annoy the elves >.>

Petrified wood for the win!
Like Xenon said, it's rare, it's a cool color, and for some reason the simple fact that it's petrified wood. Petrified wood is a tree that converted.

Diorite, because the real thing looks really neat. Black matrix with little white crystals and takes a very high polish.

Chalk. It is flux stone. It has bituminous coal. It has magnetite. It has a pretty colour. I like its name more than limestone or dolomite. It has jet, which is another pretty rock. It comes in layers.

I suppose it comes down to...it's chalk.

I also like obsidian. It is pretty too.

I voted sandstone, since I like deserty things.

I do, however, like all the colored magma-safe stones from a practical standpoint. Rutile deserves some special mention, since I like dark purple.

Limestone!

My very first successful fort (which is still going strong) was stuck in a mountain of it. Now I equate limestone with success, and it's held true.

All my fortresses made in areas with little or no limestone has succumbed to Fun within the year. However, with Limestone, I can do anything!

Because limestone holds hematite, limonite, magnetite, lignite and bituminous coal. And is a flux to boot. Add this mix with magma and you've got a steel-industry.

Limestone. Dolomite has too much talc, chalk is nice but it's less believable as a construction material. Of course, any sedimentary layer is fun, but limestone and chalk are both flux which makes steel production a breeze. Nothing like digging the first floor of your fortress and getting the messages "You have struck Magnetite", "You have struck Bituminous Coal", and "You have struck Lignite" back to back. Give me two months, I'll have more steel than Pennsylvania.

Yeah I know, ancient topic, but still relevant. I thought about making the exact same poll, but it's more interesting to reuse an old one to include existing old votes.

My vote is Petrified Wood. I was enchanted when I saw it in real life. It also has nice properties in game: Magma-safe, lightweight, a nice decorative color and rare enough to feel special. Finding it is christmas time to me.

Pitchblende would be my second. Purple, extremely heavy and radioactive. Awesome.
