Marble; multipurpose, never lets you down and forms the base for so many constructions that i've had to move over to limestone for flux use.

Gabbro.

Why would I like a common gray stone with no properties?
It's the layer stone that contains the ore of Nickel, Kimberlite, and often contains Olivine.

Dolomite, but only because that is what Fry's dog is made of.

Cinnabar - Because everyone wants to be surrounded by bright red blocks of Mercury.  Though I mainly use it for drawbridges - the bright red color should be ample warning to stay away.

Kimberlite. Great blue color, and means you could find some diamonds.

I've found Chalk to be a nice choice. It has huge deposits, useful materials in those deposits. It's a relativly high-value stone allowing 3x3 rooms to be decent quality with nothing but smoothing. It also makes the area a nice white color, which makes bloodstains and vomit stand out nicely in battles.

Pitchblende.
Make mugs and goblets out of it and sell/give to the elves, or make toys so their children can play with them hehe. Also I love purple, now if only there was more of it so that I can build a nice project out of it.

I think I saw rutile once and it was purple too, but it seems to be even more rare than pitchblende. Maybe I should adjust the colors of a few stone types to get some more purple ones.

Personally I'm a fan of sandstone. It's nothing fancy, it's the working-dwarfs stone.

(and my house is made of sandstone blocks) :D

I just love Kaolinite's navy blue color.  It goes well with everything!

Wish I could find it more often though...

Kimberlite.

My vote goes to Obsidian... In Vanilla DF, but also in my own modded DF.
I would never vote for a flux stone considering I always mod out the existence of flux from my version of DF.

Come to think of it...
In my modded game I only have Sandstone, Slate, Granite, Obsidian and Marble as layers...
I do like the colors like Microcline and OrthoClase (Alunite is too... white and Olivine is a bad color green) but was only allowed to choose 1.  :P

I picked Olivine.  I just like the color green, and now it's magma safe!

Why isn't bauxite getting more love? It's magma-safe, a nice blood-red color, contains rubies and sapphires, and is a real-world ore of titanium!

its a real world ore of aluminum, but the dwarves aren't nearly advanced enough to extract it. rutile is a real world ore of titanium
