I like the way the poll is 50% bauxite and 50% microcline even before I voted.

Dolomite, but really any of the sedimentary flux layer stones. That's dolomite, limestone and chalk. They have everything a dwarf needs for making steel, and now with the magma sea, there's always some of that available to fire the forges, smelters and kilns. Along with the abundance of minerals makes for a nigh inexhaustible steel supply. Which is awesome, of course.

Pitchblende would be my favorite, but sadly you can never find enough for it to be usable.

For usable stone I would go with marble. I love building large, elaborate structures out of marble blocks. The only thing that would make it better would be if I could engrave it.

Olivine. It's pretty.

...what?

Messing around with magma for the first time.  Still haven't produced a !!dorf!!, but I've discovered the wonders of not having to worry about fuel, i.e. SMELT EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.  HEY URIST, BRING ME THAT KITTEN, LET'S SEE IF WE CAN SMELT THAT TOO.

Pitchblende.

I use it to kill elves give the depot a nice pretty purple color.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.

It would be nice if the materials and temperature systems were a bit more fleshed out. You could create a material that has a high innate heat, high enough to set something on fire. But it takes a while for that heat to build up to dangerous levels.

Thus, you could build your trade depot out of pitchblende, and then seal it up with a drawbridge. Eventually the traders will cook and burst into flames. When the flames die down dwarves can run in and steal up all the good stuff. Since it takes a while for the dwarves to heat up enough to burst into flames it should be safe for them to just walk by.

(Yes I know Uranium doesn't work in this manner, but Uranium is warm to the touch, and being able to exploit a naturally warm material in this way would be lots of !FUN! as you could slowly microwave elves.)  :D

Dolomite. It doesn't cop out when the heat's all about.

That wasn't technically a miscarriage, but the doctors didn't have a concise term for "gave birth and immediately baptized the baby in liquid fire."

petrified wood. Its a nifty thing, fairly rare, and a good co9lor when used for building things. also because i want to annoy the elves >.>

Limestone.
Something about the preserved carcasses of millions of tiny critters just makes me smile. (That IS what Limestone is made of, right? or is it another stone that's made of the dead things?)

I picked Olivine because in my latest fort I dug a stairway into the cavern-o-doom early in my game and one of the layers had enough Olivine to dig a large room out. My dwarves all died horribly in the "green room."

Dolomite. It doesn't cop out when the heat's all about.

I too was going to do a dolomite joke. Then I found that wikipedia.com doesn't have an entry for the Dolomite TV show. Anyone know a community that is good at filling out wikis? I unfortunately have no knowledge of the show, hence the need to use wikipedia.

I just love Kaolinite's navy blue color.  It goes well with everything!

Wish I could find it more often though...
