If marble was good enough for the temple of Zeus, it's good enough for a fort.

Kimberlite. Why? Because I can chant it in a faux-german accent and it sounds really, really bad. But as I am only chanting the name of the stone next in vein to diamond, no one can do anything about it.

KIMBERLITE! KIMBERLITE! KIMBERLITE!

I'd have liked to see Hematite, admittedly.  I often have trouble getting my hands on a map with Hematite, so it's a bloody, hard-fought battle to get some, and totally worth it in the end.

That said, I do quite like Olivine.  It's such a lovely shade of green.  I built a huge silo out of the stuff once.

I like Kaolinite.  The deep red color hides blood beautifully.  Magma proof is also a plus.  I tend to build all my levers that connect to lava with this stone to remind me, "Hey!  This is Red because it's LAVA!"

Curse your practicality. Where's the adventurous spirit?

"Hey! This is Grey because I couldn't be bothered colour coding! I wonder what it does!"

Definitely chalk, the best of the sedimentary flux layers. While dolomite is full of talc and limestone is clogged with malachite and galena, chalk has only the standard sedimentary stones, leaving more room for the important stuff (magnetite, bituminous coal, lignite, bauxite, and gypsum).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Cobalite is cool too, especially when built in thing along with microline. Too bad there's never enough.

My vote goes to Obsidian... In Vanilla DF, but also in my own modded DF.
I would never vote for a flux stone considering I always mod out the existence of flux from my version of DF.

Come to think of it...
In my modded game I only have Sandstone, Slate, Granite, Obsidian and Marble as layers...

Erm...
I do hope you understand that when I mention that I simply removed the [REACTION_CLASS:FLUX] and alter the metal raw to make flux useless.

Ahh.  The second part where you mentioned only have 5 stone layers sounded as if you removed stone types completely, rather than altering the properties.

I just love Kaolinite's navy blue color.  It goes well with everything!

Wish I could find it more often though...
Kaolinite is dark red. I believe you're thinking of Kimberlite, which is the dark blue one. And yeah, that's my favorite too.

Whenever I find Kimberlite I hastily chew through the vein looking for diamonds :D Same with Bauxite clusters and Rubies\Sapphires (and the coveted Star Ruby\Star Sapphire). Some non-ore types of stone are as fun to find as platinum ore simply because they can hide secrets.

Kaolinite for it's red color.  Nice that it's found in good quantities too.
