Newb searching for some lil' help
« on: May 19, 2010, 02:48:10 pm »

Hello everyone.

It's a good week i'm looking around this game...
It has an high potential to totally hook me, but the graphic so far is putting me a bit off.

I downloaded various versions and graphic set, because the plain old ascii for a game, that i see so much much more complex than a simple roguelike (adom anyone?), is not much advisable.
So i tryed some stuff, but didn't got good results.

My questions are:

What combo of DF version with graphic set is the best for you?
I'm searching for a good graphic set, that changes every item, creature and so on, not just partial objects, a total set.
And yes, i also saw that stonesense thing... will get my hands on it as soon i learn a little more of the basics.

Thanks in advance (and sorry for my bad english)

ps
Did you know that DF has an entry on tvtropes? Yea, i came to know of DF while trapped in that site (once you enter...)

I don't use a tileset myself, but by far the most popular one is Mayday's. However, it could be that tilesets are still incompatible with v31.04. If you really, really, really want to be sure you can use a tileset and care less about the new, improved gameplay, I suggest v28.181.40d19, along with -again- Mike Mayday's set.

This doesn't really exist.  DF's graphics support is still very incomplete.

When my friend first showed me the game the graphics scared me... until I started playing and learned what each tile was. My answer to your question is: keep the ascii graphics!

Hi and welcome.

Many people advocate Mayday's set. My opinion is that tilesets (or character sets) suck. The support isn't there for a proper tileset yet. One thing that IS supported, however, is a graphics set.

Since it seems like what you are looking for is being able to tell the difference between creatures, a good graphic set is what you need. I currently use a Hybrid of about 6-7 different sets. It's got a pretty broad set of graphics shamelessly ripped off of other people's efforts. I suggest you take a base of what is out there right now and work from there. Most of my base doesn't even exist anymore, and I kind of cobble mine together with the old stuff I have and occasional new stuff I pick up. (Sphr's stuff features prominently in the graphic set I use)

It -Looks- like Chariot's set is a good starting point to create your own hodgepodge mess. You can find it Here.

Alternatively, you can look here for things you like and put together your own. You can also cobble one together out of stuff you find on the internet

Or, if you are a good sprite maker, you could make one from scratch. Any which way, Chariot's set makes a good framework for even that.

For the time being, I, like some others here, recommend staying away from tilesets. Such things replace letters in words currently. Eventually that won't be true, but until then, better to wait. If you must have one though, Mayday's combined pack is seen as the "king" around here. It is found here. Plenty of Tilesets can be found here. Many of them might be a perfect balance of what you want versus intolerable letter replacement.

Thanks for the answers!

Another thing, i downloaded some graphic sets... they are basically the whole game with the custom graphic included rather than something you add to your current game folder, right?

Heh, i was expecting this  :P
As i said, i'm a roguelike fan, so i'm not one that scream for a ubergraphic upgrade... i just want to able to recognize a boulder from a fat dwarf just by looking at it.

But i will give a try to ascii...

It's just a matter of time, seriously. I play with graphic sets but I make them for myself. I can also finely play with ASCII. The only thing that bugs me in mods is that L can be a lion, a lizard, a lizardman or a lamb. I use graphics for creatures, other tiles are just a matter of taste IMHO.

Some of them are the whole game, some are just a folder that you add to an existing installation of the game.  The former will usually be labeled "pre-packed" or "pre-installed" or something.

That's not a bad idea, Deon, just using the animal graphics. I may have to try that.. but my problem is I hate the size of most tiles. I use a 9x14 or 9x16 font, and like to have more fonts versus HUGE fonts that make me need higher resolution. (My graphics card is crap right now).. so my screen space is at a premium.
