Arni spat in disgust. "How are we supposed to get across that?" He said, pointing at the lake. "We're out of supplies, have no tools or weapons, and we are dragging two little kids along. We are going to die out here."
"Don't you blame little Sakzul and Ramcolukes!" said Denise angrily. "They are good kids. But they can't go much further. We need to find somewhere safe to rest for a while."
"Mommy! Mommy! Look. Look. A rock wall. Over there." Ramcolukes laughed and ran towards the wall.

"Hmm... Definately dwarf construction. Fairly shoddy work though. Not a very good mason." said Burnt as he ran his hand along the wall.
"But can I get inside? Surely there is an entrance. I can hear noises coming from the other side." Arni interrupted.
"Its no use. You were right. We are going to die here, looking at this wall." moaned Denise.
Burnt looked cheerful, "I've been in worse spots before old chaps. Here is what we are going to do. Spread out and look for potential supplies. We need to see if there is anything out there to help us survive. I'm going to strategize."

The cultists watched the migrants scatter across the landscape.
Suddenly a voice, "I can hear your breathing. Seven of you by my count. Everyone else is off, so why don't you tell me what is going on here?"
Deon yelled down, "We are religious recluses on a mission to better understand the gods. Go away!"
......................................
A bunch of voices spoke all at once from the top of the wall. Burnt tried to sort them out, but about all he caught were the phrases they are only children; prove their worthiness; damn elvish spies; and let them starve.
The same voice as before yelled down, "We have decided that if you want to set up a camp outside of our wall you are welcome to, but you are not welcome inside unless you do something which proves your worth. And don't expect any help or mercy from us."

Denise looked around for her son. She had seen something in a shrub that turned out to be old bones, and when she turned around he had disappeared. "Ramcolukes! Where are you!"
"Mommy, look at my new friends." Ramcolukes laughed excitedly.
She walked in his voice's direction. "Oh gods! Ramcolukes! Get away from there!"
"Why mommy? They are nice." Ramcolukes pouted, as he stood up from between the two rotten dwarvish corpses. "They said they wanted to play with me."
"Just get back to the wall. And don't run off again!"

"Your inventory report, Arni." demanded Burnt.
"Four logs, two bodies and their belongings, a couple of skeletons, and 5 bones." replied Arni. "Not much to survive on."
"I knew we were going to die." sobbed Denise.
Burnt cut her off. "Get a hold of yourself! You are a dwarf. Not some dainty little elf. Act like it." He continued, "Now this is what we are going to do. Arni. Start fishing like your life depends on it. Because it does. Rigoth. Build a fishery. You and Denise take turns cleaning fish. Denise. Build a butchery. Break up those skeletons. I'm going to build a carpenters workshop and build a training axe out of the last log." He spat in disgust. "I'll feel like an elf with a wooden weapon in my hands, but its all we've got. And I'm pretty sure I'll be able to cut more trees with it once its done."

Denise prodded Burnt, "Pick it up. Its not going to bite you."
"I changed my mind. I'd rather chew through the tree than use a wooden axe. It's too elvish."

Denise walked up to Burnt. "We are still alive because of your ideas. They were so wonderful. The wooden axe was also your idea. Go ahead and pick it up. For me...please" she pleaded.
Burnt just sat there staring at the axe.
Arni yelled, "Crows! Skeletal Crows! Help me!"
Burnt jumped up, glanced at the axe, then turned away empty handed.

"Did you see the look on his face?"
"Yes, we were all impressed with your fighting skills. Yes, you could probably fight off a whole flock of crows emptyhanded. But what about Ramcolukes? Can he fight off a skeletal elephant while you are busy wrestling another on the other side of the fort? What about me, or Arni, or the others? Stop being selfish and do your duty." said Denise.
Burnt looked as if he had been slapped. "Yes maam." He picked up the mango wood training axe.
