This is a saga of survival and glory.  (And likely of creepy dwarven incest, but mostly a saga of survival and glory.)
 
Six males and one female travel into the unknown.

What was their crime? From what unjust punishment did they flee?

They come from a dwarven religious kingdom, where the power is really held by the high priests.

According to these, the crime is treason and heresy.  The punishment is death.

Desperate to survive, our heroes go into the wilderness.
 
They come across the perfect site to settle in the tropics.  But perfect to whom?
 
Two strips of land.....one haunted....the other terrifying.  A joyful freshwater lake running through the center.
 
The ancient maps say that in this area, magma is not very deep.

Their mission:  Survive, seal themselves away, build a temple to glorify their gods, procreate, and seek the deeps.

But which will be more difficult?  Staying alive in a harsh, evil land?

Or surviving the tensions threatening to tear their group apart?
 
But there is more.  As the news of this new cult spreads across the land, other dwarves will come seeking entry.  These dwarves will be forced to live outside the tower on whatever scraps the tower dwarves deign to give them.  Only those who prove themselves worthy with truely heroic deeds will be allowed entry into the tower.

Fort Info: 
First the standard stuff
1.  I've claimed one dwarf.  Every one else is up for grabs.  If you have any preferences as far as traits or likes/dislikes, I'll keep them in mind, but no promises.
2.  I'll be listing the unclaimed dwarves.  Their genders, professions, and some important skills.
3.  If you claim a dwarf, I'll post the description.  I'll also have the original 7 posted.
4.  Feel free to journal for your dwarf, but please spoiler the text.  Keep in mind that these are non-canon

Unless they aren't, if they are good and fit reasonably well with what I've got in mind.

and I may also be journaling from your dwarf's pov, especially if they get elected mayor.
5.  If you claim a dwarf, pick a name, or I'll use your profile name or some variation.


Now for some unusual stuff
1.  The original seven are in a cult.  They will be sealed away from the outside world.  An outside dwarf could be invited in if they are worthy.  An epic fight, making a cool artifact, or something else entirely could get someone invited inside.  Let me know if you think someone is worthy.
2.  For the sake of the story, noncultists are not capable of altering any cultist constructions unless abandoned.
3.  Since I'm using Genesis mod, there are a wide variety of castes that dramatically inluence gameplay.  While you will know the castes of any claimed dwarves or cultists via the description images, I'm keeping migrant caste secret until they are claimed.

Who does he think he is?  Deon elected himself expedition leader while we were out scavanging for supplies, and now he claims that by ancient law he can only be replaced after a sign from the gods.  Isn't that why we fled?  To get away from those rusted shackles of buracracy.....  To find someplace that hasn't been shaped by the rigid constructions of the priesthood.....     To find someplace where we can reforge our souls and find out what the gods have in store for us.......     But no.   More of the same petty crap we put up with at the mountain home.  I'm going to grab my pick and get to work digging us out a home.  Maybe by the time I get done DoomPotato and Hazey Jane will have found some plants, brewed them, and I can get drunk on something that doesn't taste of mushroom.  And Deon...he will get what's coming to him.

Deon's Journal:  1st Granite 1051
We will be the first dwarves in a thousand years to commmune directly with the gods without being priests, and I, Deon am the grand architect of this plan.  I'm so smart and so wise.  If the other dwarves follow my exact commands, we shall be sure to succeed.  They aren't too bright though, so I'll have to keep a close eye on them.  Especially Hazey Jane and OmnipotentGrue.  Those two are highly suspicious.

Someone figured it out.  The note tucked under my arm while I was sleeping.  I just don't know how someone figured out that I am a woman.  I'd been able to keep this secret hidden since shortly after I grew my first whiskers.  Maybe I should never have...  But no!  All of the priests of  Girtol the Ferries of Tricking were men.  All I have ever wanted was to learn more about and grow closer to him.  I must go.  I have work to do.

Why did we stop here?  There isn't anything tasty around for me to kill.  There are bones everywhere.  Even the trees and shrubs are dead.  Its creepy, downright creepy.  I'm pretty sure our skilled architect got us lost.  Did that bone move on its own?

Awesome!  They totally fell for it!  I switched the maps around and now we are settling someplace without any plants to gather.  Everyone else is going to be busy with their specialty, so I'll be able to spend some quality time with Hazey jane.  If you know what I mean.  Wait.  No one reads this but me.  At least they had better not, or I'd be in trouble.  So I guess I mean quality time....if I know what I mean.  And I do. And its awesome!

Oh I like to chop and chop and burn..

Deon's Journal:  3rd Granite, 1051
In addition to expedition leader, I have appropriated all other leadership positions.  I am after all the most highly qualified dwarf on this excursion.  Except sheriff.  A dwarf of the lower crust like myself should not be expected to dirty myself with a position like that.  I'll assign one of the common dwarves to handle issues of justice.
 
We have been here but two full days, and already our progress is startling.  Before the wagon had even stopped moving, Ingiz grabbed a pick and started digging.  Such energy.  Such undisciplined behavior!  I grabbed the remaining pick and followed him underground.  We need to dig according to my plan after all.

Meanwhile, I ordered Therleth Thimshure out to find some game to kill.  He quickly came back, saying he refused to go back out to the north.  Something about giant armored monsters with six legs.  Nonsense.

IS IT AN OBSIDIAN DWARF WOODCUTTER? I kinda spotted it from the first screenshot. Yay!

Also what's up with all the dead plants and trees? They are ALL dead, look at gray leaves and stalks o_O.


Anyway yeah, I claim Zan. A firecasting woodcutter is going to make this land even more dead than it is now .

P.S. I see forest spider webs . Hehe.

P.P.S. Do you see that purple guy in goggles? That's right, our current noble is a jade dwarf. He's going to be legendary in no time .

I'll take Inod, the snake dwarf hunter/butcher.  I wish dwarfs would actually USE archery in this version cause right now they just try to club things with thier crossbow, which seems to me like it will significantly reduce my dwarf's life span in a terrifying/horrific landscape.

Actually I really wanted Zan because if you look at his profile it sounds like he has awesome hand/eye coordination and is able to hit things with his fireballs due to his awesome spatial sense and exellent patiance. But two people before me already are trying to claim him so I'll let them fight it out.

Events of Mid-Granite 1051:

Deon stood near the center of the room polishing his pick.  Looking around, he thought to himself, 'Now thats how you dig out a room.  Exactly to code.  Now that I've shown Ingiz how its done properly, I'll let him continue digging below while I go check to see what the others have done wrong outside.'

Meanwhile, a level below, Ingiz heard a voice say, "Nothing would get done properly around here if not for me." Then the footsteps moving away.

"Pompous ass." Ingiz muttered.  But he had to admit that Deon sure picked up on things quickly.  He started not hardly being able to swing a pick, but after digging just a third of a room, Deon was almost as good of a miner as himself.  "If he keeps this up, and keeps his mouth shut about laws and regulations, I might be able to stand him."

Deon walked out of the entrance tunnel.  As he looked around the landscape, he saw a couple of dwarves idling about.  "You!  Yes you, Therleth Thimshure!  Why aren't you hunting?  We need the food.  Hazey Jane and DoomPotato, the storage area is ready for the food now.  Get to work."

"Sure thing." DoomPotato replied, looking over at Hazey Jane.

Therleth Thimshure protested, "But there's nothing out there alive except for those giant insects, and you said they didn't exist!"

Deon responded, "Well if you aren't going to do your job and hunt, at least do something useful.  I see some webs over there.  See what you can do with them."  He continued on his tour of the grounds before Therleth Thimshure had a chance to respond.

The other two dwarves had been keeping busy.  Deon nodded in approval as he saw Argonnek fell tree after tree, and OmnipotentGrue already had a pile of mussels taller than himself sitting next to him beside the lake.  He had harvested so many, but no one was cleaning them!  Never passing up a chance to delegate jobs, Deon yelled back at Doren, "When you are done moving all the food barrels, set up a fishery, because you are cleaning mussels."

'Back to digging,' Deon thought to himself, walking back to the entrance.  As he passed Argonnek he said, "I'm going below.  If you see anyone without anything to do, have them haul the wood into the storage areas."  Taking a quick look around to see if anyone else was within earshot he added quietly, "And don't waste any time hauling yourself.  Cut as many trees as you can, as quickly as you can.  What I told the others is true.  This is a perfect place to get lost.  Perfect, because no one in their right mind would come here to live.  There are dangerous beasts about.  I intend to wall us in as soon as we get enough stone."

Argonnek just smiled and started chopping faster.

Maxicaxi, I'll give you Iton and change his name to DoomPotato.  He's the last male of the original seven and has several levels of axedwarf. 



If anyone wants a dwarf, there is still one left.  The only female dwarf in the fort is still unclaimed.

Besides... having a feel for relationships, worshiping a god of hospitality, and possessing the skill set she does hakes her about the perfect tavern wench.  Name her Hazey Jane.  Hazey Jane the friendly, if somewhat slow and forgetful, tavern-wench.
