Tiristthad, City of the dwarves.
« on: May 19, 2010, 12:58:05 am »

So, I got bored in my current fort, and had nothing better to do.

I decided to begin building a dwarven city.
Putting all that stone to good use ^_^

I have already been playing this fort (Dwarf fort :P ) for a few days, so I have a population of 19.
If any of you guys want a dwarf, I've got this list:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and if any of you want to claim one of the few animals, just say so.
It's only mid-autumn, and part of the city is up.
There is no running water yet.

I hope to get some screenshots up tomorrow morning of the city in its current state.
Anyway, here is a little story about it.

Tiristthad, started out as nothing.
The dwarves had decided to turn a vast, white sand desert, into a bustling dwarven metropolis.
TO accomplish this, they needed a lot of hard work, booze, and [SPEED:0].

So in early spring, 7 miner/masons arrived and began to dig into the ground.
Upon reaching microline, they brought it up to the surface, and Began building a tower out of pure microline.

Unfortunately, they ran out, so they Decided to pause construction of the tower and begin the city.

First, they layed down several buildings.
Second, they channeled out all the sand and build supports out of rock underneath the buildings. These are now the sewers.
Third, they built roofs for these few buildings.
And fourth, they channeled out the main roads and built a nice road.

Seeing that that was all done, these 7 dwarfs decided to dig down into the northern soil and find the aquifier that should be there.
After several days of digging, they found nothing.

So, they turned back to the beginnings of a city, and decided to build a second, smaller tower, that houses the entrance to whatever lies deep underground.
After much digging, they broke into the caverns. And guess what they saw; Water!

Preparations to build the pump stack that would bring water to the city began...

Are any of the Legendary Miners female? If so, I'd like one. Named "Bard".

As the sand was being channeled out, one dwarf accidentally stranded themselves and fell down 3 levels.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Quite some bad injuries, and one of our legendary miners...

Work was suspended on the avenue as a makeshift hospital has begun to be built.
Will Urist pull through?

Edit:
Final update for tonight.
Urist only has some red injuries in the lung and false rib (or something.) I think he/she will be just fine.
Anyway, Started work on the power grid that will power the pumps...
Hope to finish powering the upper pumps tomorrow.

I never was sure, but do the lakes in  the cavern refill?
I know the one I found doesn't, cause I pumped out of it a bit...

If they do refill, which ones? Those that connect off-map?

If you have any dwarves destined for Sheriff-hood or the Military, I'd like to claim one as Frag.

May your fortress grow high and strong!

Work has begun on the new apartment complex.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some good news:
Urist is going to pull through. I don't know when she will be able to work again, though.

And I have to build 13 more pumps to complete the stack...
Still no clue how I will power them.

Maybe I shouldn't have embarked in a waterless desert.

------------------------------------------------------

I'll set up a military and enable invaders as soon as toady fixes the military crash in .04. We're a peaceful mission until then.
So you'll be in ;)

Yay, we have only 5 pumps left to build.
Mechanisms are in a shortage, so I have 2 "engineers" constructing them away.

I also need more wood, if I am to build enough windmills to power this enormous stack.
Beds? There are enough for the fort at the moment. I just need more bedrooms.

I just finished one of the resident's papers:

Mello is one of our woodworkers. He is talented in all woodworking skills. (Not including wood crafting.)

Edit:Update on Urist's health.

Here are some plans and other stuff showing the progress of the power generators.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In this diagram, we have the area under the main power room.
It is where we connect the pumps to the power.
Yes, a ton of wood will be used. Already cleared the whole south part of the map of trees, and that was only for the pumps.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Main power room. All power connects to here. (Or at least, for a while it will.)
These gears connect to the windmills that will be up on higher levels.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Here, there will be a large platform holding gears that are underneath the windmills on the levels above.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Finally, here we have the first level of windmills.

And here come the traders.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Time to quickly find a broker ::)
