I know water will flow through a fortification, but will the fortification depressurize the water? Also, can a water pump pump directly into a fortification, or does it need an empty space? Example:

Sorry, I'm not sure what the standard characters for things are.
x = solid wall
. = empty space water below it
o# = water pump, pumping from the left
f = carved fortification
` = empty space full of gobbos to be drowned

Only a diagonal depressurizes liquids. Fortifications do not depressurize anything unless it happens to be on a diagonal.

You can pump directly into a fortification.
