Choosing a new family name for myself and wife.
« on: May 18, 2010, 01:11:45 pm »

I'm getting married next year, and my fiancee and I decided to combine our names. However I find myself strapped for ideas and she keeps answering "Bidoof" when I bring it up because she's a bit of a troll.

Our names are Timothy Landreth and Emily Metzger, future kid's names are Raquel, Sibyl, and Dameon/Damian(some spelling of that, we should talk about that...)

Right now I'm warming up to "Meland"/"Mealand"

Name your kid What's, and your last name shall be Updog!

Well, how about posting your actual last name?

What are your and your fiance's last names? It wouldn't help to give a string of gibberish of letters to combine. Some people have a hyphen connecting the combined last names, have you thought of that?

Landzer would get you in trouble in Germany ;)

Landmetz?
Gerland?

Also, Metzger is 'Butcher' in German.

Nothing wrong with posting them, unless you're embarrassed or something. Its not like you told people where you live. Besides, we won't be able to really help you unless we know what the last names are.

Edit:nm on what I said, per what Dwarf posted a few posts down.

Lol, I think I see why you're having problems.

How would landzer (or landzger) get you into trouble though?

I guess Metzger became a last name for the same reason Smith became a last name.

Coincidentially, my moms side of the family has the last name black and my dads side is smith. So, you get blacksmith (or rather smithblack) out of that. I have my dads last name of course.

I like Bidoof

Here's some I can think of:

Landreth Metzger combinations:

Metzland (prounounce metsland)
Landreger (Land-Ra-Grrr)
Metreth (as spelled)
Rethger (Reth-gear)

But personally, I vote for "Urist"

I'd like to know this too, I'll have to ask her since she's got some German speaking ability.

I'll propose Metzland to her, though probably with the Z sound.

Well, if you take a name from what you see on the internet (or this forums), it is quite possible that you will regret it later.
Try asking families, relatives or very close friends instead.

It's not like I'm letting others decide for me. I'm looking for ideas. Besides it's quite possible to regret any decision later.

His fiance suppousedly knows some german, so that might help.

Doesn't hurt to ask for ideas though. Still, you're probably right, it would be a good idea to ask your family, relatives (both yours and your fiances) and close friends about it and see what they think.
