Oops, my asteroid actually is a moon. But that's alright, more space to build stuff!

I definitely want to get involved in some more militaristic stuff as much as I can. I already see that is where the big money is, I'm just having trouble keeping up with most everyone else in fleet size / technology. Figured I'd try to get some more economic bases going to give me a little boost. Pretty sure I started on a bad astro, with a bad build order, and then proceeded to colonize more bad astros. /laughs at self

I'd really like a nice production astro. I'm guessing that would be something with great solar energy and great metal. Gonna have to keep scouting to find one that isn't already fortified, hah!

Looks like I'll need some carrier tech so I can have a massive missile-killing strike force of fighters. That's cool, though, I like carriers and fighters in games like this.

OH -- another question, this time about the optional account upgrade thing. If I upgrade my account for, say, a month, and end up having more than the 9 free bases, do I keep the additional bases if I revert back to a free account? Considering buying the upgrade anyway to help out whoever I used as a referral and to support the game a bit since I like it so much. Think I used LordBucket. Probably.

@Nonsapient, I was surprised that we couldn't send money to each other. I generally like support roles more than anything else, too, so had a plan to do something similar to what you were thinking. Still, I think you should try it if you have an interest in space 4X games. Problem is I keep checking in on it while I'm supposed to be working ... it can be addicting. But you really can play for only a few minutes a day if you'd like. Spending more time scouting and exploring will definitely pay off, though. And you could always focus on freeing fellow dwarves from attackers (playing a defensive role) rather than going full-out offense against your non-dwarf neighbors, but you probably won't get nearly as much money. (Sorry, this paragraph is a wall of text from a newb!)

Yes. If you look at some of the battle reports people have posted where they occupy a base, you'll see people sometimes getting 700-1000 credits all in one lump sum. In some cases, with only a single attacking ship. Later on there will be more money to be made from destroying fleets, but right now base occupations can be extremely lucrative.

Yes. You do keep them. Additionally, you also keep any advanced structures you build beyond the allowable limit for free accounts.

Yes, there are lots of bases right now that can easily be taken with a carrier-load of fighters. Try to get there soon though, as it will become more difficult once people start using shielded turrets, and over the next few days that will be an increasing percentage of people.

Three metal, yes. Four solar is nice, but not completely necessary. With a little more tech you'll get access to energy generation buildings that generate 4 or 10 energy regardless of astro stats. They're just more expensive to build, so it's cheaper and faster with 4 solar.

However, I think you will find that "a" production base is not enough. As the game progresses, if you don't build sufficient infrastructure there will come a point where it's very easy to bring in far more money than you can possibly spend. Having only one or two prodiction bases, while having others dedicated solely to generating income is exactly the way to get stuck. All buildings that improve your production rates also generate income. So by simply building production buildings you get both income and production capacity. Whereas if you focus only on income, you tend to have lots of money and way way to spend it.

I recommend that you make every base a production base. Even your research bases should have shipyards, factories and refineries just as high as everywhere else.

Note that if you'l be active in combat, this is even more important, because of the extra income from pillage and salvage. A months from now you may find youself collecting tens of thousands of credits of debris after a battle. If your production capacity is no greater than your base income, it's difficult to spend those extra credits.

Battles are irregular, so income will be irregular. Plan to have an infrastructure capable of huge spikes of production.

/educated

Thank you. Learning a lot here. I saw your announcement and I've already got a scout heading that direction to look for a decent-ish astro to claim.

If I understand you properly, it's a good idea to have lots of "generalist" bases that generate income and produce ships. So far all of my bases fall into this category, although I'm hoping one of them will be a better fleet factory than my other (miserable) astros. Keeping my eyes open for more as I scout around. Lots of scouting in this game!

Really great news about the upgrade stuff! Thanks.

One thing though, you HAVE to centralize your research. You can't really spread it out like production.

it's a good idea to have lots of "generalist"
bases that generate income and produce ships.

You will still have specialized bases: bases that do research, and one fortress base to store your fleet on. And once you're able to build dreadnoughts for base defense, you might only have a couple bases capable of buildings them. But whether or not a base is specialized for any particular use, every and all bases get shipyards sufficient to build whatever type of ships you prefer. Most likely 12 or 16 shipyards. This isn't generalizing your bases. Every base will have turrets too. And energy generation. Ship production facilities are simply another thing that every base gets, no matter what.

No economy-only bases.

you HAVE to centralize your research. You can't
really spread it out like production.

Agreed. Personally I like having three, but some people find two to be sufficient. With only 9 bases, two may be enough. Try two, and see if it works. If you can't keep two research labs and ship production on all your bases running 24/7, there's not much point in building a third set of reseach labs.

Note that you will want two non-research bases with a single lab on each to "bank" credits by starting energy and computer research. This way, those credits can't be pillaged from you, and you can cancel the research at any time for a full refund.

Oh wow. Very useful tip!

What sort of astro makes a good research base? I don't have one yet. There's an earthy planet in my starting system that has a lot of room and fertility on it. Those work or should I ignore them?

Good research astros have lots of area and high energy (3-5), but low metal (2, building on a 1 metal base is painful). These aren't good for production bases, so you won't find other players competing for them. but you don't need much to get labs online.

Good research astros have
low metal

Low metal does not benefit a research base. If you're using a free account, sure...95 area and 2 metal is probably better than 85 area and 3 metal, but it's the extra area that benefits you. Not the less metal.

Sorry, I was too much "take my word for it" and not enough "here's why." So, here's why:

3 Metal Planets:
Asteroid 65 Area, 5 Fertility
Craters 85 Area, 4 Fertility
Metallic 85 Area, 4 Fertility
Rocky 85 Area, 5 Fertility

2 Metal Planets:
Arid 95 Area, 5 Fertility
Tundra 95 Area, 5 Fertility
Gaia 90 Area, 6 Fertility
Radioactive 90 Area, 4 Fertility
Toxic 90 Area, 4 Fertility
Earthly 85 Area, 6 Fertility
Magma 80 Area, 5 Fertility
Volcanic 80 Area, 5 Fertility

The 2 Metal astros ARE the ones with more area. They also have more fertility on average. The ones that don't have high fertility have high Gas, so you can take astros in the outer orbitals. The inner ones are better, too. If you find them in the first orbital, then you can save a fortune by alternating Solar and Gas plants. If you find them in the second orbital, 3 Solar is nothing to sneeze at, and they get +1 Fertility on top of it.

You want to grab all the 3 metal astros for production powerhouses. No sense stressing out to find 10 or 12 Rockies when there's all those perfectly good Radioactives and Tundras lying around.

Thanks guys. This information is a great help. I've found a suitable spot to build my first research base on, now to build it up ... my economy is laughable right now. But hey, I've finally unlocked some fun tech!
