What do I need to run the tile-set assembler in Linux? Wine? Mono?

Oh, it runs under Mono (with .Net 4 and WinForms support installed), but it doesn't do much that's useful. Does .NET even run under Wine?

You don't actually need to use the assembler unless you want to tweak the tileset. If you just want to use the default tiles, download the premade Linux package.

You have to have Mono to get .NET support in Linux, even when running stuff in Wine.

Myself, I boot to Windows and run the assembler (after downloading the latest version) if I need to tweak the tileset graphics. Lately I haven't bothered and just use the defaults since I run DF in linux more memory available for use, so less swap action.  Oh, if only DF could use all 16G of memory I have in that computer.

Just click at the .10-one. At DFFD it is described as .11.

The Pre-installed Package is 'prepackaged'.
The Graphic Set Package only contains the graphic set and must be extracted over a DF 0.34.11 install for it to work.

If I've completed a project or discovered some reason my current one will be impracticable in my current game I tend to start a new fortress immediately to start something fresh or correct a previous oversight. And despite most releases being nominally backwards compatible, I REALLY like starting fresh with new releases.

Actually, my fortress loss is usually one of two things:  Either I'm not prepared for the first ambush, or the FPS slows to a crawl and I get so bored that I visit the circus and go download the new version.

So i made a new X. I hated that the other up/down stairs were X's and i rather prefer this one.. feels more stairlike. If anyone likes it they're free to use it.
