Toady left places for you to rewrite the tiles used in d_init.txt, so for those of us who don't use the default walls of your set (I'm fond of the crenelated 3d), it might be easier to use the river tiles.

A quicky mockup:

Transparency tile on the left, what it looks like with blue fore/black background colors (like rivers on the map), and what it looks like with black fore and white background colors (like an inverse for use as rails).

If you want, I could make the rest of the tiles for it with no "dirt" background for you to paint in later.

Indeed.
Once I saw the option to change the track tile I planned to use the river tiles.
The track tiles will look like smoothed floors with a black bar/track in the center.
I want to minimize the amount of pure black as much as possible, a feat that is made significantly harder if I also want it to work with the tileset assembler... :/

Well, there's still ways around that - two sets of river/rails for both types of floors.  If they both use partial transparency and partial gray, you can make one for the diagonal brick floors and one for the "floors smooth".  You did it really well in the crenelated 3d.

OK, I tried making one based off the "smooth floor" type, with the individual pixel checkerboard pattern.

Left is what is in the actual tileset, middle is the river, and right is what the inverse looks like on white stone.

I haven't really messed with the brick-shaped floors before, so I did this one first, since it would be easier.

For a bonus, you really only need to do about 4 of these and rotate them all, and you're done.  There aren't any good "end of the line" tiles without using the tiles already used for tables and whatnot, but I guess those are just tiles that people can live without - I'm sure they'll figure it out when there aren't any other track tiles to connect to.

EDIT:
I did some more work, trying to get the rails to look more like rails -

New version is on the bottom.  The rivers are going to be a little darker because of it, but now the rails look perfect.

I could try fudging it back in favor of the river looking brighter, but it would mean darkening the inside of rails more because I can't get both at the same time.

Alright, this is the best compromisish thing I can work out:

Newest on the bottom.

Trying to make it brighter makes the track marks show up a little in the rivers.

So far I'm managed to generate these tracks through the Tileset Assembler.

The round parts are by far the most troublesome.
Once I find a good way to manage the transparency on curves, any river/design should be relatively easy to add to the Tileset Assembler.

We could go with a single rail representation of the tracks.  This could make the double use as rivers easier to manage, while also allowing the track to look visually correct at intersections.  I remember seeing some configurations where the track guides the cart/vehicle, but isn't directly interacting with the wheels on the cart/vehicle.  This meshes with the ability of dwarves to push carts around separate from the tracks themselves without detracting from believability.

And I notice 34.09 has been released now.  I guess I should wait on my fortress now for the update here since all I've done in 34.08 is embark. ;)

Well, I guess you already are working on your own versions, but since I went ahead and made mine, there's no real reason not to share it, as well:

The left image is a separate image.
Once again, actual tileset pieces, what it looks like as a river, and what it looks like as a rail.

@NW_Kohaku: That looks impressive. Can you post the tileset please ? I would rather use the "trackier" version in my mod, then the current one.

Well, the point of the Phoebus tileset is that it has different options.  (At least, that's what I like about it.)  You just chop that left image up, and replace the river tiles with those.

I could put up the tilset I use, but I've customized it pretty heavily, already.

If you want me to do it for you, you'd have to show me the tileset you are already using.

I would be interested in seeing yours, to be honest. I am trying to write one that fits the design of my mod, but noob that I am I cant get the transparency to work properly. I can make it work so-so, but some things dont work anymore, for example the upright spikes, that should show either a line, or a line and a spike... they always show a line when I do this... and the ironhand trees look... different. Help would be appreciated. :)

Here is a non-transparent 24*24 pixel version of it:

Well, I can't work with a non-transparent version of the png.  I would only be able to give you back a non-transparent version unless I went through more trouble than I'm going to go through to redraw the whole image with transparency.

I can post what I'm using, though...

I had to use one of the upside down ? symbols to fill out the chart (the one that used to be the y with dots over it), because the current cross symbol is the stone door symbol.

Thanks. But to make it transparent I usually open it with gimp, and choose a color (dark gray) and make it transparent. And this is appearently wrong. Sorry to be such a pain, but what exactly am I doing wrong ? Do I need several layers ?
