Plus theres no way to set which tile any of the "X-linked" objects use.  They're hard coded or else they would have been changed long ago.

Have you guys thought about making requests to Toady for expanding the system as is? It seems reasonable and easy enough to do.

Maybe an optional parameter to objects, where you can specify the tileset an object uses or something?

*Updated* 0.31.25v18
Added 'Hills and Badlands' option to make world maps look better.
Added 'Brighter Low-Sky' option.
Added the Collonaded wall style. (DrD_Avel's Gold Plated wall style.)
Changed the tiles for Wells, Fortress, Anthills/Natural Hives, Chests, Toys, Cabinets, Forge & Nest Boxes.
Elven forest retreats now show up as an upright Elf on the world map.
(Dead) elves, humans, dwarves, kobolds & goblins are now upright.
Hamlets no longer show up as a teddy bear.
World map rivers and roads are now curvy.
Updated the background texture of all creatures.
Fixed the adventurer mode nighttime prickle berry bug.

That has been requested many, many times.

That change would be time consuming, and with only Toady working on the engine that means choosing between catacombs and prettier bins.

DF has been in need of a graphic overhaul for a long time.
We're talking about custom tilesets for all things in the game and full RGB support. Both of which are already partially implemented.

Fixing the hard-coding of a few items at a time would just waste Toady's resources in the long run.

Hot fix for the colon engravings and the pillars' "horns":
Colonnaded.zip @ MediaFire
Unpack directly in your DF install, and then rebuild your tileset with the assembler.
