[0.31.23v01] Phoebus' Graphic Set (Symbol chart changes & more)
« Reply #720 on: March 26, 2011, 09:26:00 pm »

*Updated* 0.31.23v01
I've changed the symbol chart. The most important change is the removal of metal quality grading.
Dwarves, Elves, Goblins, Humans & Kobolds will now be displayed as greyish corpses after they die.
Ground/Grass tiles have been very slightly improved.
I've fixed the graphic tile for Alchemists and the coloring of most water creatures.

Why did you update the symbol chart?

This isn't "aw, hell no, now I'm not playing with Phoebus'", more of a "okay, and...?"

my obsidian isn't cogwheel'd anymore?  :D

I'm guessing its because of changes in what tiles are used for, and needing to reduce the number of required unique tiles.  I'm glad I waited a bit before downloading the latest version. ;)

The primary reason for the change was that I no longer saw the use for rating metal by value.

For gems, there's many gems, and the value of the final product is directly proportional to the value of the raw material, so the 4 dot rating system works
But for metals, there's too few metals and metals are too complicated to be effectively represented with a star system. There are multiple possible alloys for the same metal/ore, some ores that can be smelted/used for multiple metals, there are metals that can be used to make weapons/armor and there's the relative effectiveness of metal in military uses.
When I started many fort searching for metals (since the metal rarity update a few version of DF ago), I found that the metal value rating system was practically useless to identify useful metals. While the unique iron symbol was useful, all the 3 dot metals are all decorative metals (plat, gold & alu), all the 2 dot metals are silver/lead, and the rest were 1 dot.

After further consideration and playing with the new system, I'll think I'll move to two symbols for metal ores.
One symbol for military ores (iron, copper, tin & silver), and one for non-military.

Couldn't you have at least kept the periodic symbol for iron? Now my hematite looks like every other metal ore.

My opinion is, that it makes it all much more realistic now.
Since a dwarf can't really see what kind of metal ore it is from a distance, only upon examination.

Good work Phoebus, lovely having corpses now.

From a realistic standpoint, dwarves mostly live and breathe underground, and are well adapted for mining. Thus, it would make sense for a miner to recognize the type of ore on the walls. It is, after all, why we have "You have struck jet!" messages instead of "You have struck an unknown rock!"

.24 update a few minutes ago, but it looks like just bugfixes. Is phoebus .23 going to work for it?

.24 has modified the raws for [CREATURE:RODENT MAN], [CREATURE:DRAGON], [CREATURE:HYDRA], and [CREATURE:BIRD_GUINEAFOWL].

Toady doesn't sleep, he merely rests one hemisphere of his brain while he continues working with the other.

I'm just going to stick with .23 for a bit, no doubt Phoebus will get around to updating at some point. Or when .25 comes out.  We haven't been let down yet.
