So, I have nothing but mad props for someone who can use nothing but found objects to update something on the internet, I humbly suggest a RAID0 setup. You need an extra hard drive, but this will never happen again.

I 'lost' the drive when I modified a partition using a partition utility and it destroyed all the partitions on the drive (including my OS), the Windows recovery tool tried to 'save' the drive a few times, not sure that helped ;).
I have 3.5 hours left out of a 9.5h process to restore all the 'important' data (~800GB) I had on the drive. Yay!

RAID0 isn't fool proof. If you knock your computer over while the disks are spinning you could still easily damage your array, same with a fire or power surges, and even if it's physically in excellent condition, it's still no match for an ill placed 'rm -rf /' or 'dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/md0', or data corruption due to faulty ram or drivers.

Well, no, but it's a pretty good start, and one that was recommended to me as a first-line precaution. Just passing info along.

While RAIDs are good for protecting critical data, RAID0 doesn't actually have any redundancy or capability to recover from HD loss.
RAID0 is mainly used to merge HDs together usually for improvements in throughput of the composite drive. If you lose any HD in the Raid0 setup you'll lose ALL your data as each file is spread over all the drives.
RAID1+ have redundancy that helps with crash recovery.

I was about to say 'hey, wait a minute', and was looking on wikipedia to double check, but yeah, he probably meant raid1.

Er, yes. RAID1, rather. *facepalm* So much for all that geek cred I'm getting in school.

Unless, of course, the RAID controller decides to start writing garbage to the drive(s).  Saw a server get five replacement drives before the guy doing the replacements realized it was the controller, and not the drive in slot 5 (of 8) that was bad. :(

And, smariot, nice penguins.  :D The plats are hard to see, though ... you might want to brighten them up some, even if it isn't quite authentic for color.

that there will be a new release, but too sad and addicted to stop.

Doesn't everyone wear a cheap suit when they play DF?
