After years of using the default tileset in its various iterations (Well, aside from Dystopian Rhetoric's awesome units for 2D/early 3D DF.) I've decided that I need graphics in my life again. Well, sort of. What I'd like to do is just use your character graphics and continue using the default tileset. I tried mucking around with the Lazy Newb Pack but to no avail. My primary reason for this is that I cannot stand how the world map looks using any sort of graphical tileset and, well, it's been years and one step at a time. Anyway, am I missing something obvious to just use the characters or is it not possible with the way this is set up?

If you want only the units. Just copy the "PhoebusDF/raw/graphics" folder over your main "DF/raw/graphics" folder or over your savegame's "DF/data/save/region???/raw/graphics" folder.
The "graphics" folder contains the units graphics.
The "art" folder contains the tileset, and the "objects" folder contains the color & tile association with the tileset. If you don't touch those you'll keep the default ascii tileset.

Is there a key for the symbols somewhere?
« Reply #1953 on: July 06, 2012, 03:11:54 pm »

Hi there,
I'm brand new to DF and love your tileset but I have no idea what some of the symbols are (especially during embarking). Is there a list of the symbols and what they mean somewhere? I can find one for the default symbols but honestly, I need at least some graphics.
Thanks,
Jason

On the DF wiki, search for "tileset" and it will list what all the default glyphs are used for (at least in general).  The difference between the default (ASCII) glyphs and a tileset like Phoebus is that some of the glyphs are replaced by pictures to make things clearer.

Also, at any point you should be able to pause the game (spacebar) and loo(k) at the one you are sure about to see what it is.

And finally, welcome to your new level of insanity, Dwarf Fortress! :D

I found the Phoebus tileset in the Lazy Newb Pack, but don't normally play on a Windows box.

I wanted to use the tileset on my Mac laptop.  I found a lot of Linux instructions that "should" work on a Mac, but had trouble "filling in the gaps", and didn't see any step-by-step instructions that were specifically for a Mac.

So I tried all the posts, took notes, and eventually got it working.  Here are my Mac specific instructions.  I need to play a game to test it all, but previously I had "c" for chickens, and now I have the white hen icons like I had with the Lazy Newb pack.  :)

--- start here ---

My Mac / Phoebus Instructions (mostly from previous posts)

1. Download df_34_11_osx.tar.bz2 from http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
2. Download DF_Phoebus_34_11v00-PreInstalledPackage.zip from http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2431

Now the actual commands:

tar -xvjf df_34_11_osx.tar.bz2
unzip DF_Phoebus_34_11v00-PreInstalledPackage.zip
mv DF_Phoebus_34_11v00-PreInstalledPackage.zip Win32Ph
mv df_osx Phoebus

Then…

rm Win32Ph/raw/graphics/graphics_example.txt
rm -rf Win32Ph/raw/graphics/example
cp -R Win32Ph/raw/* Phoebus/raw/
cp Win32Ph/data/art/* Phoebus/data/art/
cp Win32Ph/data/init/colors.txt Phoebus/data/init/
cp Win32Ph/data/init/init.txt Phoebus/data/init/
cp Win32Ph/data/init/d_init.txt Phoebus/data/init/
cp Win32Ph/data/init/embark_profiles.txt Phoebus/data/init/

Now run the game:

cd Phoebus
./df

Be sure to create  a new world, prepare for your journey carefully, filter for a good embark spot, and enjoy!

Thank you for linking to my thread. I dont righteously know why, but thanks nonetheless. Your tileset is still by far my personal favourite. :)

EDIT: Oh, and a tiny bugreport. I have a completely fresh version of Phoebus, newest download, and BradUffners handy Raw Explorer tells me that one creature has two sprites assigned.

graphics_kafine_animals.txt and graphics_nwkohaku_bird.txt both have a sprite for the CROW_MAN. You sould probably delete one of the entries.

This has been pre-fixed for the next release.

Great job on the tileset, Phoebus! Figured it would be rude to have used it for so long without giving my thanks. I was curious, though; will the races other than dwarves be seeing more detailed sprites for the nobles? I noticed there were several placeholder sprites in the human and goblin sprite sheets.

Most of the races' sprites have been created by Sphr, Jiri Petru or Deon.
My personal attempts have been hilarious at best, such as Urist McAmputator.
I wouldn't get my hopes up for any improvements to human & goblin nobles in the near future, but if I'm taken by a strange mood...

@Sarlare: Short answer, beg Sphr, Jiri Petru or Deon to fill in the blanks  ;D

I think I'm going insane. All of my military dwarves look like masons. I've tried it with a fresh download of the pre-installed pack, I've tried with manually installing it to a completely unaltered fresh download of the vanilla game, but no matter what, my military all look like masons. I've gone through the dwarf graphics file, and nothing look amiss. Seriously going loco here.

Also, the version.txt file says it is at [Version:Phoebus:0.34.07v00]. Even a fresh re-download has that, so I'm guessing it's just a 'forgot to update that number' thing. Or the links have gone weird, hell if I know.

E: Everything else looks fine, though. Non-military dwarves have the appropriate graphics, as do all the animals and such.

Just to check, what is their profession? All of them are truly "dwarf dwarvinity the speardwarf/crossdwarf" etc. or they are classified as mason or something similar while not taking military action?

Also, something that bugs me: (not entirely sure it's the tile-set fault, but it happens) since 0.34 I started getting a problem that my texts sometimes disappear. An example is the R for Repeat, or just various texts in the game. Is there a way to solve this?

That's a bug with true-type, you can either turn it off completely in the inits, or hit F12 twice to toggle it off/on which usually fixes it for me.

And yeah, my 'So and so the Speardwarf' looks like a mason.

I though I would let everyone know that "PhoebusTilesetAssembler.exe" works under the development version of Wine with the Windows version of Mono 2.10.8 installed in wine.
