They told me I was daft for building a Fort on an Aquifer, but I built it all the same, just to show em'.
It flooded then caved in.
So I built a second one; that one caught fire, was besieged by orcs, and then flooded and caved in.
but the third one... stayed up! and now you can do the same! good luck to ye!

Why not just mod carp to become dangerous again?

I actually never had a map with carp on any of my 40d map. Of course I never had any forts with rivers bigger than streams.

I only ever made 2-3 forts near anything larger than a brook. The first crumbled to it's end in 2 seasons. The second was fine, I just gave up. And the third, and most awesome, had unimaginably horrible carp/pike/longnose gar/lamprey, orc, and monkey problems, but held together just damn fine.

Carp were annoying, but I think I only ever had 1-2 named ones. One longnose gar, blossomrams had a 4-5 dwarf streak in less than a minute. 3 were eaten, and 1-2 jumped into the pool on the opposite side of the narrow passage they were walking down. This ended in the killing of it and the naming of 'Erith the Bitch', marksdwarf, slayer of blossomrams, because her baby got eaten almost immediately after being born (on the spot, actually) and she was still F!%#*^G ECSTATIC :D
They chewed up my woodman and left her to bleed to death the first year too. Recognizing the dangers of the area presented, being tropical and fishy, she had a guard dog, who waited for her to die before going after the carp, and also losing.  ::)

It was damn fun though.

If you want to feel the burn again you can just learn modding in it's most basic form (copy pasta things similar to what you want to create and mess with them). It's seriously easier than MLA format in writing. I think I'll make some more powerful/aggressive ones that are identical by name and tile to those in-game. Fun for the whole family.

Even better, leave the old ones in and make three more 'breeds' of carp, each deadlier than the last. That way you'll never know if you're safe or doomed.

I never had too much problem with carp. As soon as I found a river with them in I posted marksdwarves.  To me they were just the [LARGE PREDATOR] of the river (along with pike and the like.)  I do the same thing with the spookies in the caves in the current version.  They come on map, out goes the ☼Steel Plate Mail☼ militia (grand-master immigrant.)  Biggest problem recently was a broken arm while fighting a Troll.

But yeah, I don't think its a fantasy land if there aren't monsters everywhere. Temperate rivers need something scary.  Also my mayor likes pond grabbers for their patience.

EDIT:
OH, in 40d I was a fan of building a wonderful breezeway that follows (depopulated) underground rivers. I would put shops, statues and zoos along it and imagine my fort as a vacation spot. I even had the route to the trade depot follow the river. I mean, its not like dwarves would go to the beach.

Hmm, need to figure out a good way to do that with the caverns...

That was my exact thought when I read it. Oh god why did you make me to read it. Now I am adding piranhas to genesis, with tough-as-steel teeth. Poor dwarves, it's all YOU who did it. ;)

lol my first map ever had carp. I had no idea what they were. I kept wondering why the river was red and why I was getting messages about dwarfs being struck down. I was looking everywhere for dangerous beasts and all I saw were some fish. I thought, those can't be dangerous can they?

The only problem I can see is that you can distinguish between them by reading the descriptions. You don't want to be able to tell if a carp is huge until it kills your war elephants.
