Even if you have very tiny caverns you can always dig one yourself. Basically just empty out an entire Z level. Flood it and let the water drain/evaporate away. Trees and shrubs will grow with extreme vigor.

This only works once a native underground water source has been found. Doesn't have to be big, just so long as it's found, underground plants will grow all over your fort wherever there's mud and soil.

Yes, but you're pretty much guaranteed to find it now. Just dig down and there are multiple caverns. Its hard not to hit one these days.

The point is, the caverns must be breached before trying to farm for wood. Some players are timid about breaching until they have a nice military ready. In reality, even just flooring over the stairs as soon as you breach the caverns is all you need to get underground plants active.
