Well, frankly I don't know what the exact issue was with that particular job error. Jim's idea sounds valid but I don't have any way of testing what the problem was. I just kept assigning and removing jobs to destroy parts of the mechanics, and adding and removing labors on dwarves, until things worked.

Meanwhile the flow issues brought progress to a near-halt. Things are decently well along now, enough that I should probably reveal the project's nature to the public. Will work on a fresh post in our fort page tonight.

I have Team Chaotic Evil's save. Year eight is underway.

Luckily my framerate isn't as bad as I thought. It dropped down to 4, then slowly climbed back up to ~16-17 fps.

EDIT: We have three six forgotten beasts and a caged giant. I like this fort.

EDIT2: I seem to have spoken too soon.

Seriously, 2? I don't get how it could be so low. I mean, we had like eight pages of animals and more constantly breeding plus 100ish dwarves until I butchered them all last turn and we had like 16 FPS. Is it just your computer, do you think?

We have...

170 dwarves (40 are children)
153 tame animals
1 caged giant
12 creeping eyes
1 cave crocodile
18 two-humped camels (one of which is harassing the workers)
12 one-humped camels
a magma man
5 troglodytes
a buzzard
six forgotten beasts trying to path into the fort

and a whole lot of dead shit. Also about 20k stone and maybe 15k of everything else. On a Dell Inspiron 1150:

Hence, 2 fps, and it's only 18th Granite.

Also,
we had like eight pages of animals and more constantly breeding plus 100ish dwarves until I butchered them all

is going into my sig if there's room.

Journal of Urist Imiknorris, 27th Granite, 1058.

We seem to have entered a strange lethargy, which saps our energy and willpower. Time seems to be affected as well, and our pace would appear normal. Other fortresses have claimed years have gone by, but it is not even Slate yet. I suspect it is because the world is having difficulty handling our fortress. As a result, I have ordered over a hundred animals slaughtered. This order goes unheard over the sound of my previous call to move everything possible up into the tower. Currently, every able-bodied dwarf is moving alcohol up to the third level, and building beds on the second.

Urist's Report, Saturday, July 10, 2010.

All efforts to improve my framerate have failed. At this rate (approx. 2/3 fps), I would need a week of nonstop DF to finish the year. <insert various raging about 41 children, 150+ animals, 130 workers, half-hour to complete a day, etc.> Unfortunately, I am leaving for a (family, aka mandatory) vacation (yes, a vacation from my vacation) one week from tomorrow. I have no idea when I'll be back, and my father is forbidding the "export" of laptop computers from the house.

Right now I do not believe I have the capacity to finish my year. The only alternative I can think of is to let a teammate take over when I leave. Would this be acceptable?

Also, seven forgotten beasts. One was dicking around in an unrevealed part of the cavern.

This who thread and ideas are sorely in need of Obsidian Viewer or something of the like (3d viewer not isometric)

I'm working on a tower that's going to be in 100z levels of water. Shame I didn't set the sky 100zlevels... I could have a 200 zlevel tower without digging down at all. =-C Really don't want to lose all the time I've spent on draining the ocean though. So, I guess 140 zlevels will be my limit haha. Only 40 of it would be seen above the surface though...

I think we're fine under the rules as long as we don't have any one double up on years.  I would volunteer, but I'm leaving next week on a 30 day camping/road trip, and my girlfriend has forbidden DF.  Since Robocorn went last, Pheonix_RE could wrap it up if he wants, or you or me could do it once we're back.  I have a feeling some of the other teams will still be working then.

One of our players has (apparently) disappeared, and I've done all I care to to see if he'll show up.

So Team Skycrashes is now open again. I need someone to complete the 7th turn for our fortress, because Barbarossa wants to go last and I want him there as well.

If you missed getting onto a team the first time around, now's your chance to join one. And if you're already on a team and your turn's not currently up, it's not against the rules to play on another fortress.

Whatever the case, I would greatly appreciate the help.

If I had time, I'd go a second round with this better developed fort.
...but I don't. Not till the weekend.

Here's Team Chaotic Evil's Eleven-Months-To-Go save.

Dear [insert deity name here], that was a painful month. I think most of the lag was from this laptop having so little memory.

Your toils in the face of FPS rights abuse is commendable. I'll be quite happy to see a tower finished! :P I presume Cloudpillar is still idly underway for its last turn as well, we've kind of lost steam but the plans to finish despite being totally unable to do so within the time limit push us onwards.

A day took a half hour. I couldn't even let it run in the background (one core, not enough memory).

Well, if the save still needs completing when I get back I'll knock it out.  In the meantime, I'm driving about 7,000 miles through the American and Canadian west for the next 30 days, so unless someone invents an interface that takes dictation before 8:00 am tomorrow, I won't be able to play for a while.

See yous guys in a month.

Shame I'm in the middle of a six-week architecture course as of the writing of this post.
Yeah, I think our team's going to have to wait a while till we finally finish up with this tower.

six-week architecture course

That is really really awesome and I am totes jealous :|

In general tower news, Cloudpillar has completed its 'final' year - or rather, its eighth year. We're going rogue and finishing it via just taking our time. We were a handful of z-levels short of the 100z mark, but it wouldn't have really mattered because only our scaffolding is done anyhow. The actual tower begins now, in year 9, whenever I get around to starting it.

Whenever Stonesense supports .10, I'll come back and take some screenies.
