I would think that space-wise towers would be easier since instead of digging out space, you are creating your own space.

Just got Cloudpillar's save back from Silfurdreki; probably starting year 3 later today.

Again, I'll join the team when I am aware of what overall design they are going with. It needs to be a design I'm excited with. A design I can get behind.

What are your qualifications?

Today we learned a lesson. No matter how many fortifications you have in your water passages, if a forgotten beast can get through one, it can get through all of them. On the bright side, was a good stress-test against my precautions.

Ain't no fortifications thick enough...

Um, CutieBard, is it still your intention to compete in this? If not, please say something, so that your spot in the "team" can be freed up.

Progress on SkyCrushers once again grinds to a halt.

The problem this time? A corrupted save.

*sigh*

Ah, that's too bad, Jim. Not the best luck :\ On the bright side.. look at all the practice you've gotten!

In Team Cloudpillar news, I just finished the third year (http://www.mkv25.net/dfma/poi-23596-mainlevel). Stuff accomplished: Groundwork for obsidian factory and power plant (though we're encountering another stupid water flow glitch), managed to dig out and collapse our rather-large-but-definitely-not-compensating-for-anything moat, properly equipped our small yet well-trained military, and got scaffolding up to I think 13z above ground level, which including the moat gives us 15z of tower. Aw yeah. I actually only managed to collapse the moat on Obsidian 28th, and it took up until the save for the moat to clear of dust. Still - I think that's all of my goals for the year accomplished.

ghe, a nice beehive layout, breeding camels, and a huge obsidian farm! hey, the magma is so close to the surface.

word of advice on the obsidian farm: make it 3 zlevels tall. dwarves can't channel over bridges, and obsidian making leaves obsidian floors on the z-level above. if you can't remove the floors, it'l make your farm unusable.

agh, skycrushers got corrupted... ooh, weekend coming.

The main inspiration source for the Cloudpillar layout is actually not a beehive, but columnar basalt.

I suppose this question was always going to come up at one point or another, so here goes: How do multiple towers fit into the rules? For example, if I was to make a "complex" of four, 25-story towers, would that be acceptable?

I'm expecting that you'll say "No, you idiot! GTFO and grab yourself a can of sense!" but I'm just asking in order to clarify.

Team Skycrashes has moved on to Year 3. The corrupted save magically became uncorrupted and I was able to finish the year. Links to our progress can be found on the first page of our homethread.

Well, technically, no. The height is measured from the lowest level of the tower to the top level of the tower. Whatever 'the tower' is is up to you, but no, you can't stack shorter towers. However, as the size is up to you, you could make four towers all going up to 100z and just make them thinner. Most groups seem to have a pretty wide base. If you cut down on base size, your building speed is going to go up like crazy.

ToadyTwo's just completed his turn for SkyCrushers. Here's the map on the DFMA for your viewing pleasure.

He made some nice progress with the tower, adding some pretty cool lookin' arches and digging out the base of the tower a little.

He had some goblin trouble at the end of his year. Seems to be a running theme with this map.
